Doug Martens on a Rail to Top Lake County Sprints, Bickett takes Stock Car win

By Shawn Neisteadt

(May 15, 2004-Madison, SD) Rain and cold weather conditions set the stage for a very fast, tacky track at Lake County Speedway on Saturday night. The results were some blinding speedway and some great racing action.

Doug Martens took the lead at the drop of the green flag for the sprint car feature. Chuck McGillivray and Brent Vonk started to dice it up with one lap counted as McGillivray took fourth away, but Vonk battled back and re-passed the 11-time track champion. The battling continued and Jody Rosenboom, in his first ever start at Lake County Speedway, drove into the top five on the second lap.

The racing slowed twice with five laps counted. First, Cody Hansen slowed and came to a stop on the track. The sophomore drive had ran out of tearoffs and could no longer see. He replaced the visor's plastic strips and rejoined the field. The red flag waved on the restart when the #5w of Dusty Wasmund slapped the turn three wall. The car took a violent tumble and slid down the speedway in front of several cars. The rest of the drivers did a brilliant job to avoid contact. Wasmund left a heavily damaged car on the track as he walked away uninjured.

Martens had the gas mashed and walked away with his first win of the season. Brad Nelson ran a strong second with McGillivray taking third. Vonk crossed the line fourth and Rosenboom rounded out the top five. Martens, Nelson and McGillivray won the heat races. Ryan Bickett flipped his #17B in the second heat race and collected Jordan Martens to end both of their evenings.

Jeremiah Jordahl led the early portion of the Late Model Stock Car feature. With one lap in the books, Don Bickett and Scott Freet advanced into second and third as they overtook Kent Plimpton. On the ninth lap of the event, Jordahl and Bickett ran door to door for the top spot with Freet and Gary Brown, Jr side-by-side just behind them. Bickett became the new race leader as they drove off turn two. Brown snuck his way past Freet then drove around Jordahl for second on the eleventh lap. Bickett held off Brown to take his fifteenth Lake County Speedway win. Jordahl finished third just behind Brown. Freet finished fourth and Mark DeBoer drove from ninth to fifth. Bickett and DeBoer won the heat races.

Paul LeBahn was leading the Sportsmen feature to a restart on lap two when he dipped low and pulled off the speedway. Matt Ayres inherited the lead. Ayres led for a lap until Jamie Tieszen drove into the lead off turn two. Tieszen led the rest of the way to snag his second win of the year. Ayes was second with former Hobby Stock champion, Mike McGillivray in third. Greg Roeman took fourth in his first appearance with Kevin Spurgin in fifth. Tieszen and Spurgin won the heat races.

Colter Deutsch is not a regular racer at Lake County Speedway, but he is a two-time Huset's Hobby Stock champion and a regular top runner at Rapid Speedway. In his first appearance of the year Deutsch started tenth. The deep starting position was overcome as he drove to fourth un just one lap. At the halfway point, Deutsch drove past Justin LeBahn for the top spot. Deutsch led the second half of the future for the win. LeBahn took second. Kevin Prussman was third with Lane Brenden fourth. Steve Eliason won the "B" feature, started thirteenth in the "A" and finished fifth. Deutsch, Prussman and Matt Scholl won the heat races.

Chris "don't call me Matt" Scholl led the entire distance of the Deuces Wild feature to take his first win. Dave Kennedy and Tanner Olson rounded out the top three. Kennedy and Chad Larson won the heat races. Jeremy Fedeler took his first win of the year in the Wild Ones main event. Brian Heiman, Gerg Jung and David Christensen followed across the finish line.

Lake County Speedway will race again this Saturday night.
