Bickett Rockets to Sprint Win, DeBoer unstoppable in Late Model Stock Cars at Lake County
By Shawn Neisteadt
(May 8, 2004-Madison, SD) The weather warmed up for the second week of racing action at Lake County Speedway. The action on the track was warm as well.
Chuck McGillivray, an eleven-time and defending champion, took the initial lead of the NMRA 360 Sprint Car feature. The yellow waved with one lap counted when pole-sitter Brad Nelson spun in turn two. Doug Marten drove into third on the restart as he overtook Cody Hansen. That gave Martens the best seat in the house to watch McGillivray and Randy Droescher battle for the lead. McGillivray was running the high line with Droescher taking the shorter route around the bottom. On the second lap it was Ryan Bickett charging as he overtook Hansen for fourth. Brent Vonk drove into the top five one lap later. Lap traffic temporarily broke up the side-by-side battle for the lead on the fifth lap, but Droescher was soon wheel to wheel again with McGillivray. The caution again waved for Nelson on lap six when his ill-handling #47 looped in turn two.
On the resulting restart, Bickett took third from Martens. It was now a three car battle for the lead. Droescher was attempting the low line to get past McGillivray, that coaxed the defending champion off the high line. Bickett took advantage of the open groove up top. Bickett took second from Droescher on lap eight then used his momentum to pass McGillivray coming off turn two for the lead. Bickett went on for his ninth career Lake County win. McGillivray and Droescher continued to battle to the finish with McGillivray edging Droescher out for second. Martens finished fourth and Josh Holt drove to fifth. Nelson and Droescher won the heat races.
In the Late Model Stock Car feature, it was Rick Goth driving from the pole to the lead at the start of the 15 lap event. The caution waved on lap three for a spin involving Al Barnhardt and Jeremiah Jordahl. On the restart, Mark DeBoer, who started tenth, drove past Matt Steuerwald and Perry Tschetter to take over fourth. DeBoer, the defending national NMRA champion, then took third from defending track champion Gary Brown, Jr. The race was just past the half way point when DeBoer pulled door to door with Rob Anderson for second. DeBoer used the bottom to take second off turn two. The caution was again displayed on lap ten when Scott Freet spun entering turn three.
Brown moved into third once again on the restart as he went past Anderson. Out front Goth was being challenged for the first time when DeBoer stuck his nose under the leader. The two ran even until DeBoer drove to the top spot on the eleventh lap. That was the turning point of the race as DeBoer remains undefeated in the Late Model Stock Cars at Lake County. Goth held off Brown for second. Brown settled for third with Anderson fourth. Matt Steuerwald finished fifth. DeBoer and Brown won the heat races.
Matt Ayres led the entire distance of the Sportsmen feature for his fifteenth career win at Lake County Speedway. Jamie Tieszen, the defending champion ran second with Mike McGillivray in third. Don Gerritsen, Jr. made the trip Iowa and finished fourth with Kevin Spurgin fifth. Tieszen and Spurgin won the heat races.
It took eight laps for Steve Eliason to drive from eighth to the lead of the Hobby Stock feature. Jon DeBoer was second. DeBoer led momentarily after three wide racing cost Curt Ottoson and Lane Brenden top spots. Travis Morris crossed the line third with Aaron Penning fourth. Andy Hansen finished fifth. DeBoer and Kevin Prussman won the heat races.
Greg Jung and Brian Heiman ran door-to-door for the entire distance of the Wild Ones feature. Jung edged out the win with Heiman second. Jeremy Fedeler took third with David Christensen fourth.
Chad Larson led all eight laps of the Deuces Wild feature to give the defending champion the win. Jordan Heiman finished second with third going to Myron Prussman. Todd Dozark was fourth and Eric Kluit took fifth.
Lake County Speedway races again this Saturday night.
