Schliemann takes Outlaw Win at Lake County Speedway;  Season Champions Crowned

By Shawn Neisteadt

(September 13, 2003-Madison, SD)  Micah Schliemann used a last lap pass to take the win of the only Outlaw Sprint appearance on the season at Lake County Speedway.  The night also crowned champions in the five stock car classes.

Randy Rosenboom took the lead of the Outlaw Sprint feature as the green flag dropped.  On the second lap of the race, Chad Meyer, in his first race since being injured at the beginning of the season, took second place off turn two.  On the third lap, 11-time track champion, Chuck McGillivray moved past Brent Vonk for third place.  Lynton Jeffrey was also on the move as he took fourth on the fourth lap.  That good run of Jeffrey ended on lap six when the engine expired on the Winter Girls #4K.

One lap after the restart Micah Schliemann took over the fourth place from Chuck McGillivray.  On the next lap Meyer became the new race leader as he overtook Rosenboom.  McGillivray was then on the charge as he retook the position from Schliemann then on lap nine entering the third turn McGillivray took second.  Schliemann charged into third on lap ten, the halfway point, an Mark Dobmeier moved into fourth on the same lap.  Schliemann and McGillivray started battling again on lap 13, but Schliemann took over second and then set his sights on Meyer.  With five laps to go Dobmeier took third from McGillivray.  McGillivray battled back and took third once again on the next lap.  With only two laps to go, Dobmeier again took second from McGillivray as they entered the first turn.  Just ahead of them the battle for the top spot was heating up.

On the final lap, Schliemann took to the outside of Meyer.  They races side by side off turn two and were dead even on the backstretch.  They raced through the final set of turn and Schliemann led to the finish line for the victory.  Meyer took second with Dobmeier third.  McGillivray took fourth and Bob Martin held off Jake Peters for fifth.  McGillivray and Schliemann won the heat races.

Al Barnhardt moved up to the Late Model Stock Car class to begin the 2003 season and would end the season with his first win in the class.  Barnhardt led the entire distance of the 15 lap feature for the win.  Gary Brown Jr. replaced the transmission and rear end of his #22 before the feature.  Brown finished second in the feature and secured the championship for the second straight season.  JJ Zebell finished third and fourth went to Rick Goth.  Matt Steuerwald was fifth.

In the Nordstrom's Dash for Cash in the Late Model Stock Cars, Don Bickett's crew picked up $500 for the fastest pit stop and Scott Freet made a last lap pass to win the $1000 Dash for Cash.

Matt Ayres used the high line in the Sportsmen feature to charge from seventh to the lead on the eighth lap.  Ayres led the rest of the way for his fourth win of the year.  Jamie Tieszen took second place and was crowned the 2003 Lake County Speedway Sportsmen champion.  Mike Forseth led the first portion of the race and finished third.  Brad James was fourth and Kevin Spurgin was fifth.

Justin Olson held the initial lead of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature, but lost that lead when he had to go to the work area for loose parts during a caution with one lap counted.  The racing resumed and the new race leader was Travis Johnson.  Johnson then flipped on lap 2 coming off turn four.  Johnson was unharmed. After another small tangle up on lap three, Mike McGillivray took the race lead.  McGillivray led the final 9 laps for the win and a lock on his second straight championship.  Johnny Monsees was second across the line and third went to Chad Anderson.  Darren Duffy took fourth and Kevin Prussman founded out the top five.

Skeeter Hansen had a great night in the Wild Ones class.  Hansen claimed his second win of the year in the regular feature then picked up the $400 in the Nordstrom's Dash for Cash.  Derrick Nordstom was second in the feature and Greg Jung was third.  Brett Lease was fourth and Leslie Arnett, the 2002 and 2003 track champion took fifth.

Chad Larson took the trophy for the win in the Deuces Wild feature and took home the point title as well.  Dave Kennedy was second in the feature and third went to Dennis Martin.  Jim Klutman was fourth and Tanner Olson took fifth.  Kennedy did not win a feature in the regular season but scored the $400 victory in the Nordstrom's Dash for Cash.

Lake County Speedway's season has come to its end, but you can still catch racing action in the area.  Friday night September 19 will be the season championship at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, IA.  Huset's Speedway then hosts the 39th annual National Cheater's Day on Saturday and Sunday September 20-21.
