Freet rides the cushion for Lake County Win
By Shawn Neisteadt
(September 6, 2003-Madison, SD) Scott Freet used the high groove to motor his way past Gary Brown, Jr in the Late Model Stock Car feature to take the win. While in the Super Stock feature it was all Brian Diede.
Brown pulled into the lead at the drop of the green flag in the Late Model Stock Car feature. The yellow waved with four laps counted as Chris Ellingson spun and collected Rob Anderson. The yellow waved again one lap later when the third place car, Al Barnhardt, spun in turn two. That moved Scott Freet into third place. As the green dropped once again, Freet went to the outside and took second from Matt Steuerwald. Freet then used the high side of the track to catch Brown who was running on the bottom of the track. On the tenth lap Freet was able to pull alongside the race leader. On the eleventh lap of the race Freet inched his way into the lead as they came off turn two. The race was still far from over though. Brown battled back and into the lead off turn four, but the momentum of the high side put Freet back into the lead at the flag stand. That was important as they yellow soon waved again when the #3 of Steuerwald spun.
The race was then set up for a two lap dash to the checkereds between Freet and Brown. Just as before each stuck to their groove with Freet upstairs and Brown on the short way around. They raced side by side to the finish where it was Freet taking his second win of the year. Brown took second and third went to Rick Goth. JJ Zebell finished fourth and Mark DeBoer rounded out the top five.
The Super Stocks made their second appearance of the season at Lake County Speedway. The 15 lap feature was all Brian Diede as he led the entire distance for the win. Charlie Bloomenrader was second and third went to Lorin Johnson. Ross Dixon took fourth place and Greg Keppen rounded out the top five. The yellow waved once in the feature when the #21 of Russ Phillips slammed the front stretch wall and slowed on the track.
Mike Forseth led the first four laps of the Sportsmen feature but lost the handle on the fourth lap in turn two and spun out. From that point on it was Matt Ayres as he led the rest of the way to take his third win of the year. Daryl Reverts was second and third went to Jamie Tieszen. Kevin Spurgin came back from a flat tire that he received from an incident with four laps to go and finished fourth. Don Gerritsen, Jr raced his way to a fifth place finish.
Justin Olson had the early race lead of the Hobby Stock feature, but it only took four laps for Mike McGillivray to charge from tenth to challenge for that lead. McGillivray took the lead in the first turn on the fourth lap. Coming off the second turn McGillivray and Olson made contact sending both cars into the wall. That took out both of the top two cars and handed the lead to Nick Bahr. Bahr made the most of the present and took home his third win of the season at Lake County. Travis Johnson was second and third went to Darren Duffy. Lane Brenden was fourth and Andy Hanson rounded out the top five.
After a few failed attempts to get the Wild Ones feature under way, Tara Johnson took the lead. Brian Heimen then took the lead on the final restart of the race and went of for his third win of the year. Leslie Arnett was second and third went to Skeeter Hanson. Johnson was fourth and Greg Jung took fifth.
Myron Prussman took his fourth win of the year in Deuces Wild action. Shawn Callies was second and third went to Chad Larson. Dave Kennedy was fourth and Jim Klutman rounded out the top five.
Lake County Speedway hosts the NMRA Nationals on Sunday September 7. The season wraps up on Saturday September 13 with championships for the stock cars. The Outlaw Sprints make their annual appearance on championship night as well.
