Bickett takes sprint win at Lake County; McGillivray claims 11th championship

(August 30, 2003-Madison, SD) Ryan Bickett led every laps of Saturday's sprint car feature to take his fifth win of the season at Lake County. Chuck McGillivray finished fourth and that was enough for McGillivray to lock up his eleventh Lake County Speedway point championship. Second place in the feature was Brad Nelson with Joe Riedel taking third. Butch Hanssen finished in fifth just behind McGillivray.
Al Barnhardt took the lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature at the drop of the green flag. Three laps were in the books as the yellow flag waved for Perry Tschetter and Matt Steuerwald who had tangled in turn one. One lap later, the point leader, Gary Brown Jr. slowed with a flat tire.
On the fourth lap of the race, Rick Goth took second from Scott Freet and then on lap five Goth overtook the lead from Barnhardt in turn four. Freet took the second place on lap six as he tried to keep pace with Goth. Freet made several attempts to get around Goth, but the #90 was too fast as Goth grabbed his second win of the year. Freet was second with JJ Zebell taking third. Chuck Harming finished fourth and Tschetter came back to fifth.
The Sportsmen feature showcases two and three wide racing, and when it was all said and done, it was Josh Schmidt in victory lane. Schmidt had won previously in Hobby Stocks, but this was his first win in the Sportsmen class at Lake County. Jeremiah Jordahl took second with Billy Prouty in third. Don Gerritsen Jr was fourth and fifth went to Kevin Spurgin.
Travis Morris was the initial leader of the Hobby Stock feature, but the car on the move was Mike McGillivray. McGillivray started eleventh and grabbed the lead on the fifth lap. McGillivray drove to his sixth win of the year. Jeff Beck was second and third went to Jason Schwader. Lane Brenden crossed the finish line fourth and Steve Eliason was fifth.
Leslie Arnett led every lap of the Wild Ones feature to take her sixth win of the year. Brett Lease was second. Brian Heiman, Tara Johnson and Greg Jung rounded out the top five.
Chad Larson took the lead of the Deuces Wild feature on the second lap and went on to his fourth win of the year. Shawn Callies was second and third went to Dave Kennedy. Kurt Heineman and Kermit Rose rounded out the top five.
Lake County hosts a points race for all stock car classes as well as Super Stocks returning next Saturday with the races starting at 7pm. Sunday Lake County Speedway will be holding the NMRA Nationals with 360 Sprint Cars, Late Model Stock Cars, Super Stocks, Sportsmen, Hobby Stocks, Wild Ones and Deuces Wild competing. Races begin on Sunday at 5pm.
