Super Stocks, Rain, an Iceman and a whole lot more at Lake County Speedway

(August 9, 2003-Madison, SD) Clouds rolled over Lake County Speedway late in the after noon and rain fell all the way up to 8 P.M. Track crews and drivers went to work on the speedway and the racing program began just one hour later then its scheduled time. For the evening, WISSOTA Super Stock were added to the program.
Greg Vanvra led the early part of the Super Stock 20 lap feature. On lap seven, David McDonald passed Doug Van Lier for fifth. At the halfway point, 10 laps, the #3E of Corey Elward went passed McDonal for fifth. The caution flag waved on lap 13 when Elward, Brian Beutler and Chad Deerborn were collected together on the backstretch.
On the restart, McDonald was on the move as he took second, but that run came to a halt on the sixteenth lap when he cut a tire and relinquished the second position. That moved the #13K of Greg Keppen into second, but it was Gregg Nelson on the move at the restart as he took second. On the seveneenth lap, Nelson pulled side by side with Vavra the race leader. They race like that until Nelson took the lead on lap 19 coming off turn two. Nelson went on to win followed by Vavra. Keppen finished third. Doug Myers took fourth place and Van Lier rouned out the top five. Nelson and Myers were the winners of the heat races.
Randy Droescher was hooked up in the sprint car feature as "the Iceman" lead all 15 laps to claim his first Lake County win of the season. Cody Hansen finished second and third went to Butch Hanssen. Chuck McGillivray was fourth and Ryan Bickett finished fifth. Brad Nelson was running solidly in the top five when he pulled in with three laps remaining. Droescher and Bickett win the heat races.
Matt Steuerwald took the lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature at the drop of the green and led until Gary Brown, Jr pulled along side coming off turn two with a lap counted. Those two ran door to door until Brown pulled ahead in the fourth turn a lap later. Brown then went on to claim his fifth win of the season at Lake County. Steuerwald was second and third went to Al Barnhardt. Scott Freet finished fourth and JJ Zebell was fifth. Steuerwald and Barnhardt won the heat races.
Kevin Spurgin came from the eighth starting postion to the lead of the Sportsmen feature in just four laps. Spurgin was unstoppable as he took his fourth win of 2003. Jeremiah Jordahl made a hard charge but settled for second. Third place went to Rick VanderWeide from the fifth row. Daryl Green led the third lap of the race and finished fourth and fifth went to Matt Ayres. Jordahl, Green and Joey Hofer win the Sportsmen heat races.
Jason Schwader moved from the front wheel drive ranks into the Hobby Stock this season, and was treated with his first win on Saturday night since the move. Schwader led all 12 lap for the win. Steve Eliason came from eleventh for second and Mike McGillviray charged from eighth to third. Darren Duffy finished fourth and Nick Bahr crossed the line fifth. Quentin Myers took the win of the "B" feature. Aaron Penning, Jeff Beck and Lane Brenden were victorious in heat race action.
Brett Lease took his third win of the year in Wild Ones action. Greg Jung was second and third went to Derrick Nordstrom. Brian Heiman was fourth and Leslie Arnett rounded out the top five.
There was a change in the finishing order of the Deuces Wild feature after post race inspections. The win went to Myron Prussman, his fourth of the season. Shawn Callies was second and third went to Kurt Heineman. Fourth place went to Jim Klutman and fifth went to Austin Van Vooren.
Lake County Speedway races again this Saturday night. Also, note the special events coming up for the track located just outside of Madison, SD. August 23 will be the Bob Beck memorial race. September 6 and 7 is the NMRA Nationals and the season championship with Outlaw Sprint cars racing is on September 13.
