Anderson Returns to Lake County Winner's Circle

By Shawn Neisteadt

(June 14, 2003-Madison, SD)  The green flag waved on the 360 sprint feature and taking the lead was Mitch Runge.  On the second lap Randy Droescher went by Josh Holt and grabbed second as they raced off turn four.  The yellow waved on lap eight when Holt slowed on the speedway.  He had tagged the wall one lap earlier and broken the front suspension on his Mike's Jake and Jill #16v.   The red flag waved on lap 11 when the engine let go on Doug Marten's #51.  The car engine created a large fire, but Martens was able to get out and walk away.

The racing continued and on lap 13, Brent Vonk moved into the top five as he passed Ryan Bickett.  Runge continued to lead as the white flag waved.  On that final lap, Kim Muntefering took second from Droescher.  At the finish it was Runge followed by Muntefering and Droescher.  Fourth went to Chuck McGillivray and Vonk rounded out the top five.  "We just put this new car together," said Runge after his second career Lake County win.  "We worked the bugs out of it last night and got it thumping tonight."  Runge and Droescher won the heat races.

The caution waved two laps into the Late Model Stock Car feature.  Rick Goth and Perry Tschetter tangled on the front stretch.  While that was happening JJ Zebell and Mark DeBoer got together in turn two.  DeBoer required assistance to get out of his badly damaged #23 and was taken for further examination on the lower leg region.

Gary Brown Jr. moved into the top five on the restart, but Goth took that spot from Brown on lap four.  The caution waved again on lap 7 when Scott Freet suffered a flat tire.  Goth suffered a flat tire on lap nine and gave up his top five spot.  More flat tires slowed the race on lap 11 when Don Bickett and Brown slowed on the track.

With tires replaced and four laps remaining the action heated up again.  On the exit of turn four Rob Anderson ducked to the inside of race leader Matt Steuerwald.  Anderson drove into the first turn as the new race leader.  Anderson held on for his first win since 2001.  Steuerwald was second and third went to Al Barnhardt.  Goth made a last lap pass to reclaim fourth and Freet came back to take fifth.  Anderson and Bickett won the heat races.

Brad James took the lead from Mike Husman with four laps to go in the Sportsmen feature.  James went on for his first win of the season with Matt Ayres second.  Husman was third and fourth went to Daryl Reverts.  Rick Vander Weide came from twelfth to take fifth.  James, Ayres, and Husman won the heat races.

Aaron Penning led the Hobby Stock feature until spinning out on lap five.  That gave the lead to Jeff Beck.  The two-time champion was unstoppable as he drove on for the win.  Chad Anderson was second and third went to Travis Johnson.  Walter Kiggins was fourth and fifth went to Steve Eliason.  Eliason won the "B" feature.  The heat races were won by Beck, Mike McGillivray, and Kevin Prussman.

Brett Lease picked up his first ever win by leading every lap of the Wild Ones feature.  Leslie Arnett was second and third went to Jeremy Fedeler.  Jeff Brown was fourth and Greg Jung rounded out the top five.  Tara Johnson and Fedeler were victorious in the heat races.

Chad Larson picked up his second win of the season in the Deuces Wild feature.  Dennis Martin was second and third went to Matt Scholl.  Myron Prussman was fourth and fifth went to Travis Christensen.  Larson and Shawn Callies won the heat races.

Lake County Speedway will be racing on July 4th as a special holiday race.  Racing resumes this Saturday night.
