McGillivray Maneuvers to Lake County Checkereds
By Shawn Neisteadt
(May 17, 2003-Madison, SD) Racing resumed Saturday night after rain forced the cancellation of the event one week prior.
Eric McGillivray took the lead as the green flag waved on the NMRA 360 Sprint Car feature. With one lap in, Chuck McGillivray moved around Doug Martens for third. The red flag waved on with two laps completed when Joe Riedel got on top of the wall and slammed into the turn four fence. Riedel's #11JR was severely damaged, but Riedel was able to walk away from the incident unharmed.
One lap after the restart, Chuck McGillivray went to the high side of turn four and took the second position from Josh Holt. Five laps into the race the McGillivray's battled each other side by side with Chuck on the outside and Eric to the bottom of the track. As the duo raced off turn four Chuck McGillivray was the new leader.
Chuck McGillivray led the final 10 laps to give him his 52nd career Lake County Speedway win. Eric McGillivray was second followed by Holt. Martens finished fourth and Mike Sandvig finished fifth in his first appearance at the speedway. Riedel and Kim Muntefering win the heat races.
Gary Brown Jr took the lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature on the second lap of the race as he overtook Perry Tschetter. Brown then began to pull away from the field, but his lead evaporated on the closing laps. With two laps remaining Rick Goth was on the bumper of Brown. The white flag waved over the speedway and Goth gave one last effort for the win. The two battled side by side through the last set of turns. Brown was able to hold on for his second win of the year while Goth settled for a close second. Scott Freet made a late race charge for third and Tschetter was fourth. Matt Steuerwald finished fifth. Brown and Steuerwald won the heat races.
Three laps into the Sportsmen A feature, Jeff Hoogendoorn flipped wildly in turn one. The accident looked very violent, but Hoogendoorn was able to walk away. Daryl Reverts led the race from late in the opening lap until Rick VanderWeide took over the spot on lap seven. VanderWeide was untouchable once he got out front and went on for his first win of the year. Reverts finished second and third went to Josh Schmidt. Joey Hofer crossed the line fourth and Jeremiah Jordahl took fifth. Hofer, Jordahl and Matt Ayres took wins in heat race action. The B feature was won by Mike Husman.
The caution flag waved on the Hobby Stock feature with just two laps remaining. Walter Kiggins held the restart lead, but just after the green waved again, the right rear tire blew on his car. Kiggins then lost control on the front stretch and was hit by several cars. That drew the red flag, and fortunately all drivers involved walked away. When racing resumed, Jeff Beck held off Mike McGillivray to take the win. McGillivray was second and third went to Lane Brenden. Aaron Penning finished fourth and Darren Duffy rounded out the top five. McGillivray, Kiggins and Jason Schwader were victorious in the heat races. Johnny Monsees won the B feature.
Leslie Arnett went to victory lane for the second race in a row by taking the win in the Wild Ones feature. Greg Jung was a close second and Jeremy Fedeler was third. Fourth place went to Brian Heiman and Jeff Brown took fifth. Jung and Brett Lease won the heat races. In Deuces Wild action, Shawn Callies picked up his first win of the season by leading the final two laps of the feature. Chad Larson was second and third place went to Dave Kennedy. Kurt Heinemann took fourth followed by Erik Kludt. Callies and Matt Scholl won the heat races.
