Riedel Rumbles to Lake County Win

By Shawn Neisteadt

(May 3, 2003-Madison, SD)  Gusty winds and the threat of rain would not dampen the spirits or racing action Saturday night at Lake County Speedway.

Doug Martens jumped from the pole position to the lead at the start of the 15 lap NMRA 360 sprint feature.  One lap was counted when the #16V of Josh Holt slowed on the speedway.  Steering problems had claimed his evening.  The field restarted, and on lap two entering turn one, Joe Riedel went by Martens for the lead.  The caution waved again with three laps in the books when the #31M of Kim Muntefering slowed in turn three.

Out front, Riedel was hooked up and untouchable as he grabbed the win.  Ten time track champion, Chuck McGillivray finished second just ahead of a hard charging Ryan Bickett.  Eric McGillivray finished fourth and Cody Hansen grabbed his first top five finish of his career by taking fifth.

"I came into tonight mad at myself and hungry.  I wanted to win," said Riedel after the victory.  "I knew it was going to be tough."  Riedel celebrated the victory by climbing the catch fence and entertaining the fans with his leaping abilities.  The heat races went to Holt and Chuck McGillivray.

The opening lap of the Late Model Stock Car feature found Perry Tschetter, Don Bickett and Rob Anderson getting together in the second turn.   Tschetter's evening was done while the others involved returned to the speedway.  Two laps into the race the caution waved as JJ Zebell's #29Z had a fire under the hood.  The fire crew extinguished the fire and Zebell retired for the evening.  Rick Goth was leading on lap four when Matt Steuerwald took second and Mark DeBoer moved up to third.  Seven laps into the race the caution again waved as Al Barnhardt slowed.  One lap later Anderson stopped on the track.  Steuerwald went to the infield for repairs during the caution.

On the ninth lap of the race the lead was challenged.  Goth now had DeBoer running door to door with him.  On the tenth lap DeBoer slid in front of Goth exiting turn two and the race had a new leader.  DeBoer went on for his second career Lake County win.  Goth was second and Scott Freet finished third.  Bickett came back to take fourth and Chuck Harming took fifth.  Freet and Goth won the heat races.

Matt Ayres led every lap of the Sportsmen flag to flag feature to claim his eleventh career Lake County win.  Josh Schmidt finished second with Richard Holbrook crossing the line third.  Kevin Spurgin was fourth and Jeremiah Jordahl rounded out the top five.  Ayres, Schmidt and Rick VanderWeide won the heat races.

The Hobby Stock feature was also very exciting.  Defending champion, Mike McGillivray, spun on the first lap.  Seven laps into the race, Nick Bahr spun Walter Kiggins as they battled for second.  And the red flag waved on lap nine when several cars got together and McGillivray and Andy Hanson flipped.  Kiggins was disqualified for the incident.  All drivers walked away unharmed.

As for the race, Aaron Penning led every lap to take his first career win.  Jeff Beck came from seventh to take second and Johnny Monsees finished third.  Fourth place went to Chad Anderson and Justin Olson took fifth.  Penning, Anderson and McGillivray won the heat races.  Olson won the B feature.

The Wild Ones feature went flag to flag and taking the win was the #28G of Leslie Arnett.  Jeremy Fedeler was second and Greg Jung took third.  Derrick Nordstrom and Matt Larson rounded out the top five.  Nordstrom and Tara Johnson won the heats.

Dennis Martin came from outside the front row to take the win in the Deuces Wild feature.  Shawn Callies was second and Dave Kennedy was third.  Chad Larson came home fourth and Matt Scholl was fifth.  Kennedy and Larson won the heats.
