McCarl Takes Win as Lake County Ends 2002 Season

By Shawn Neisteadt

(September 14, 2002-Madison, South Dakota)  With season championship races in 5 stock car classes, the Outlaw Sprints invaded the super-high banked Lake County Speedway to end the 2002 season.  Also coming to its end was Kenny Hansen's 27year career as he ended his racing at the track he first raced at.

Hansen set the pace with 10-time LCS champion Chuck McGillivray on the outside of the front row.  McGillivray and Hansen battled for the top spot with McGillivray taking it on the exit of turn two.  The yellow flag waved on lap three as Hansen lost the handle of his #4 in turn three and spun.  Mark Dobmeier also gave up a top five position as he took his #13 to the infield momentarily on the caution period.  Hansen and Dobmeier both returned to action.

Racing resumed and one lap after the restart Terry McCarl went by Leonard Lee for the second spot.  On the fifth lap of the race, McCarl used the high line to build his momentum and took the lead from McGillivray in turn three.  McCarl and the rest of the leaders entered lap traffic on lap eight.  The caution waved again on lap 10 when the nose wing on Dobmeier's #13 flew off.

Racing resumed and McCarl continued to lead and with Lee now in second ahead of McGillivray.  Hansen continued his charge back towards the front as he took fourth from John Lamberts on lap 15.  McCarl led 15 laps to take the win.  Finishing second was Lee and third went to McGillivray.  Hansen finished fourth and Dobmeier charged back to round out the top five.  "It's just short and fast.  You come up on lap cars real quick," said McCarl on the speedway.  He continued, "It's sticky and fast and I was looking forward to running it."  McCarl and Lee won the heat races.

In Short Track Stock Car action, JJ Zebell led all 15 laps of the feature to pick up his second win of the year.  Gary Brown Jr came from seventh to finish second and third went to Don Bickett.  Darrin Korthals charged from eleventh to finish fourth and Scott Freet rounded out the top five.  Zebell and Rick Goth won the heat races.  Brown is the 2002 track champion.

Daryl Reverts took the lead of the Nordstrom's Sportsmen feature five laps into the race and held on to grab his second win of the season.  Nation NMRA Sportsmen point champion, Scott Overgaard, finished second followed by Jeremiah Jordahl.  Rick Vander Weide crossed the line fourth and Josh Schmidt rounded out the top five.

The Sportsmen also competed in the Nordstrom's Dash for Cash race.   Daryl Reverts led the first seven laps until Kevin Spurgin took the lead on lap seven.  The cars went stopped on lap 10 for the pit stop challenge.  Josh Schmidt was the first car out of the pits to pick up the restart lead and the $250 for the fastest pit stop.  Schmidt led the race until Reverts moved back into the top spot on lap 14.  Reverts led until he relinquished the top spot on lap 18 when he spun his #7 in turn two. That gave the lead to Jamie Tieszen with two laps remaining.  Spurgin would not be denied of the $1000 victory as he took the lead on the final lap and went on to take the win.  Spurgin was also named the track champion earlier in the night.  Tieszen was second and Ryan Van Emmerick finished third.  Gary Gonyo finished fourth end fifth went to Richard Holbrook.  Sportsmen heat races went to Jordahl, Reverts and Vander Weide.

Nick Bahr led 10 laps of the Hobby Stock feature to take his fourth win of the season.  Jeff Beck finished a close second with Justin Lebahn third.  Colter Deutsch was fourth and Johnny Monsees finished fifth.  Mike McGillivray took the season point championship.  Bahr and McGillivray were the heat race winners.

Brandon Kampa came from fourth to take his third FWD Street Stock feature win of the season.  Brian Heiman was second and Craig Delfs finished third.  Fourth went to Jeremy Fedeler and Leslie Arnett was fifth.  Craig Delfs had the fasted pit stop in the Nordstrom's Dash for Cash in the Street Stock.  The pit stop was worth $200 and the restart lead.  Delfs then led the final five laps to claim the win ahead of Fedeler, Arnett, Greg Jung and Derrick Nordstrom.  Arnett is the 2002 Street Stock champion.

Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman took the lead of the Deuces Wild feature four laps into the race and held on for their fourth win of the year.  Adam Terveen/Kurt Heinemann finished second ahead of Jason Schwader/Danielle Klinkhammer.  Chad Larson/Shawn Ryan crossed the line fourth and fifth went to Matt Scholl/Brad Scholl.  Heat races went to Prussman/Prussman, Larson/Ryan and Terveen/Heinemann.  Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon won the track championship.
