Holt grabs win, McGillivray claims 10th Title

By Shawn Neisteadt

(August 31, 2002-Madison, SD)  Josh Holt and Mike McMahan set the pace for the 15 lap 360 sprint car feature.  Holt quickly grabbed the lead and the field sorted out behind him.  With one lap down, Chuck McGillivray went by Randy Droescher for the third position.  The field was working the sixth lap when Ron Dobesh went by Droescher for the fourth place.  The field bunched up with a caution flag nine laps into the race when Bryan Dobesh lost the engine in his Ron's Auto Rapair #2 and stopped on the speedway.

On the restart, the battle for third began to heat up.  Ron Dobesh slid past McGillivray on the restart.  The two drivers then ran wheel to wheel for the next couple of laps until McGillivray would take the spot exiting turn four on lap 11.  With the white flag in the air, the battle for the win became exciting.  Holt was still out front but McMahan began to challenge.  As the two cars came off the final turn, McMahan dove to the inside of Holt and the two cars charged for the checkereds.  At the finish it was Holt just a couple of feet ahead to take his second win of the year.  McMahan settled for second.  McGillivray finished third and in doing so claimed his 10th point championship at Lake County Speedway.  Fourth went to Ron Dobesh and Joe Riedel was fifth.  The heat races were won by Holt and Riedel.

Scott Freet led the opening seven laps of the Short Track Stock Car feauture, but lost the top spot to Rick Goth on the seventh circuit.  Freet wasn't done as he battle back to reclaim the lead on the next lap.  Gary Brown Jr. joined the battle for the top spot on lap 10.  Freet and Brown battle for second allowing Goth to take the lead.  Brown eventually snuck by Freet for second.

With the white flag over the speedway, Goth and Brown were running side by side.  The two ran even down the backstretch, but Brown was able to take the lead as they entered the final set of turns.  Brown led the final quarter lap to take his seventh feature win of 2002.  Goth was second and Freet finished third.  JJ Zebell was fourth and Chris Ellingson rounded out the top five.  Goth and Freet took the heat race wins.

Two laps into the Sportsmen feature the red flag waved.  Five cars tangled on the front stretch and blocked the track.  No drivers were injured.  The red flag came out again at the finish when three cars got together sending one into the air and on top of another car.  Again, all drivers walked away.  Matt Ayres led from lap 3 to the finish for his second win of the year.  Mark Janke was second and Daryl Green finished third.  Fourth went to Billy Prouty and Josh Schmidt was fifth.  The "B" feature was won by Green.  The heat races went to Joey Hofer, Matt Ayres and Scott Overgaard.

Nick Bahr led the final 10 laps of the Hobby Stock feature to take his fourth win of the year.  Justin Lebahn was second.  Mike McGillivray came from ninth to third and Aaron Penning, who led the opening two laps, finished fourth.  Jeff Beck finished fifth.  The race was red flagged on lap three when the #20 of Adam Thielbar flipped entering turn one.  The wreck demolished the car, but Thielbar walked away uninjured.  McGillivray and Scott Borkowski won the heat races.

The team of Kelly Kruger/Mark Borkowski led the entire distance of the Deuces Wild feature to take their first win of the year.  Jeff Claussen/Jason Lunders was second and Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman finished third.  The teams of Shawn Ryan/Chad Larson and Jason Schwader/Danielle Klinkhammer rounded out the top five.  Mike Klarenbeek/Aaron Spangenberg won the consolation feature.  Claussen/Lunders, Kruger/Borkowski and Matt Scholl/Brad Scholl won the heat races.

Jeremy Fedeler took the lead on the final lap of the Street Stock feature to take his third win of the year.  Brett Lease was second and Craig Delfs finished third.  Brandon Kampa crossed the line fourth and Brian Heiman rounded out the top five.  Lease and Joe Tieszen won the heat races.
