Bickett Takes Second Career Lake County Win
By Shawn Neisteadt
(August 24, 2002-Madison, SD) Two young hot shoes set the pace for the start of the sprint car feature Saturday night at Lake County Speedway. Ryan Bickett and Joe Reidel came off the front row with Bickett immediately grabbing the top spot. Chuck McGillivray was the man on the move as he took third from Reidel on lap four and one lap later passed Mike McMahan for the second position. On the sixth trip around the speedway, John Miller, who had started in the last row, moved into fourth by taking the spot from Reidel.
Out front, Bickett, the 2001 Rookie of the Year, would not be touched as he took his first win of the season and second of his career. McGillivray finished in a strong second followed by McMahan. Miller crossed the line fourth and Randy Droescher rounded out the top five. McGillivray and Reidel won the heat races.
In short track stock car action, it was JJ Zebell dominating the 15 lap main event to take his first LCS win of the 2002 season. Gary Brown Jr. came from seventh to take second and extend his point lead. Scott Freet finished third with Rick Goth in fourth. The fifth place went to Don Bickett. Freet and Chris Ellingson won the heat races.
Daryl Reverts shot from the second row to the lead on the opening lap of the 12 lap sportsmen feature. Reverts conquered the event for his first win of the year. Josh Schmidt was second after starting seventh. Kevin Spurgin charged from ninth to third and Rick Vander Weide came from tenth to fourth. Scott Overgaard came from eleventh to take fifth. Jeff Hoogendoorn, Joey Hofer and Brad James won the heat races. Richard Holbrook took the checkereds in the "B" feature.
It only happens once in a career, and Steve Eliason led all 12 laps of the hobby stock feature to experience the joy of winning for the first time in his career. Nick Bahr finished second just ahead of Justin Lebahn. Adam Thielbar came from eleventh to take fourth and Jeff Beck finished fifth. Lebahn, Beck and Scott Barkowski took the heat race wins.
Brian Heiman also received his first taste of victory as he led the entire distance of the street stock feature to pick up his first career win. Jeremy Fedeler was second followed by Joe Tieszen. Brandon Kampa brushed the wall early in the event but was able to hold on for a fourth place finish and Leslie Arnett finished fifth after having a flat tire earlier in the race. Heiman and Craig Delfs won the heat races.
When all was settled in a very exciting deuces wild feature, it was the team of Jeff Claussen/Jason Lunders picking up their second straight win. Cody Brown/Chris Bunkers finished second followed by Matt Scholl/Chris Scholl and Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon. Kelly Krueger/Mark Barkowski finished fifth. Harmon/Harmon won the "B" feature. Claussen/Lunders, Shawn Ryan/Chad Larsen and Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman won the heat races.
