Brinkhous Takes First Lake County Win of his Career
By Shawn Neisteadt
(Madison, SD-August 17, 2002) Richard Palmer set the pace for the Short Track Stock Car main event, but as the field entered its first set of turns, the leader was Doug Brinkhous. Behind Brinkhous, the rest of the pack raced two and sometimes three wide to bring the crowd to their feel. All the racing allowed Brinkhous to open up a marginal lead and walk to his first win at Lake County Speedway. Rick Goth used a last lap pass to finish in the second position just ahead of JJ Zebell. Chris Ellingson finished fourth followed by Gary Brown Jr. Zebell and Perry Tschetter won the heat races.
The feature for the Sportsmen Stock Cars appeared to be over, but it was far from that. With the white flag over the speedway, Jeremiah Jordahl began to challenge Daryl Green for the lead. As they exited turn four, Jordahl was able to get underneath green for a run at the checkered. The two cars made contact sending Green spinning just shy of the finish line, but track officials would credit Green with the win. Matt Ayres was credited with second and Kevin Spurgin was third. The fourth place went to Rick Vander Weide and Brad James rounded out the top five. James, Daryl Reverts and Joe Hofer won the heat races. Richard Holbrook picked up the win in the "B" feature.
Jeff Beck held the lead of the Hobby Stock feature three laps into the event, but would lose a wheel in turn two. That gave the lead to Johnny Monsees. Monsees continued to lead until Adam Thielbar used the high groove to take the top spot on lap nine. Thielbar, who started thirteenth, led the final three laps to pick up his third win of the season. Monsees was second and Justin Lebahn finished third. Fourth place went to Nick Bahr and Aaron Penning was fifth. Beck, Monsees, and Justin Olson took wins in heat race action.
The team of Jeff Claussen/ Jason Lunders took the lead of the Deuces Wild feature on the third lap of the event and never looked back to give the defending track champions their first win of the season. Heath Gruhlke/Travis Pusacke led the early laps but settled for a second place finish. Third went to Jason Schwader/Danielle Klinkhammer and fourth went to Shawn Ryan/Chad Larsen. The team of Kelly Krueger/Mark Barkowski finished fifth. Schwader/Klinkhammer, Gruhlke/Pusacke, and Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon won the heat races.
Brandon Kampa came from the outside of the front row and led all 7 laps of the Street Stock feature to take his second trophy of the season. Mike Kiggins finished second driving Joe Tieszen's #2. Leslie Arnett made a late race charge to finish third and Tara Johnson was fourth. Brian Heiman crossed the line fifth. Heiman and Craig Delfs won the heat races.
