(July 27, 2002-Madison, SD) John Miller would take his second win of the season as Mark DeBoer and Mark Janke would take their first wins Saturday night at Lake County Speedway.
John Miller and Mike McMahan set the pace as the Sprint Cars took the green flag for the 15 lap main event. Miller quickly asserted himself by taking the lead position. McMahan, fresh off a win the night before at the Rapid Speedway, battled and challenged for the lead, and even ran wheel to wheel for the top spot with Miller as they competed for it. Miller didn't flinch and pulled back into the lead. Miller had lengthened his lead as he headed into lap traffic on lap seven. As Rob Danielson was about to lose a lap to the leader, he lost the handle of his Billion GMC #46 and began to loop it in the second turn.
"I try to look a full corner ahead," said Miller after the race. He continued, "I didn't know if he'd save it or spin out. I went high just to be safe." Danielson was able to save the car and keep it pointed the right direction, but the car popped out of gear bringing out the caution.
The field restarted nose to tail behind the leader, but no one would be able to touch Miller as he picked up his second win of the year in the Express Copy and Printing #24M. McMahan finished second. Current point leader and nine time champion, Chuck McGillivray finished third. Fourth went to Randy Droescher and Kim Muntefering made a late race charge to round out the top five. Miller and McMahan won the heat races.
Don Bickett led the opening eight laps of the Short Track Stock Car feature but had Gary Brown Jr. battling door to door for the lead as the caution flag waved. Perry Tschetter had slowed on the speedway to draw the yellow. During the caution period, Brown went to the infield with suspension problems and that would park his #22 for the rest of the evening.
Two laps after racing resumed, Rick Goth, who was now in second and challenging for the top spot, slowed on the speedway with suspension problems in his right front. The yellow waved once again and Goth also went to the pits to end his evening. That moved Mark DeBoer up into the second position. Bickett continued to lead until DeBoer was able to take the lead exiting turn two with 2 laps remaining. DeBoer, the defending Rapid Speedway champion, held on to take his first ever win at Lake County Speedway. Bickett took second followed by Chris Ellingson. Scott Freet finished fourth and Perry Tschetter crossed the line fifth. Tschetter's #20 then lit up in flames, but the track safety crew was able to extinguish it immediately and Tschetter was unharmed. DeBoer and Bickett were victorious in heat race action.
"It feels awesome. This is the best day of my life," said Mark Janke after taking his first career win by leading all 12 laps of the Sportsmen feature. Janke continued by describing what it feels like to pull into the winner's circle for the first time. "You faze out. It's like my mind went blank and it felt like it wasn't really happening. It was awesome." Matt Ayres finished second followed by Jeff Hoogendoorn. Daryl Reverts finished fourth and Jaime Tieszen rounded out the top five. Chuck Harming took the win in the "B" feature. Rick Vander Weide won the first heat race and was in second in the feature when his engine let go on lap 10. Reverts and Ryan Mulder took the other heat races.
Jeff Beck made a last lap move on Adam Thielbar to take his second win of 2002. Rick Wibeto inched Thielbar for second. Steve Eliason was fourth and Darren Duffy rounded out the top five. Andy Ullom, Scott Barkowski and Mike McGillivray took wins in heat race action.
The team of Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman led every lap of the Deuces Wild feature to take their third win of the year. Jason Schwader/Danielle Klinkhammer finished second with Jeff Claussen/Jason Lunders in third. Fourth went to Troy Reub/Chad Simantel and Adam Terveen/Kurt Heinemann rounded out the top five. Shawn Ryan/Chad Larsen and Prussman/Prussman won the heat races.
Craig Delfs took the lead on the third circuit in the Street Stock feature and never gave up the top spot to park his #6 in victory lane for the sixth time this year. Barney Fuller finished second followed by Jeremy Fedeler. Leslie Arnett took fourth and Joe Tieszen crossed the line fifth. Fuller and Brett Lease won the heat races.
