Bryan Dobesh Takes First Ever Win in a Sprint Car at Lake County Speedway

By Shawn Neisteadt

(July 20, 2002-Madison, SD)  John Miller set the pace for the start of the Sprint Car "A" feature, but Bryan Dobesh would grab the top spot at the drop of the green flag.  With only one lap completed, Chuck McGillivray had come from sixth and was battling with Mike McMahan for third place.  McGillivray took the position for a lap, but McMahan battle back to retake the spot.  Seven laps into the race, McMahan took second away from Miller.  On the next circuit of the speedway, Kevin Ingle rocketed around Miller and McGillivray to put the Prostrollo's #2 into third place.  McGillivray went back on the offensive and took fourth from Miller on lap 10 and then passed Ingle on lap 13 for the third place.

Out front, and running on a rail was Dobesh as the former modified driver would lead all 15 laps to take his first career win in sprint car competition.  McMahan took second followed by McGillivray.  Ingle finished fourth and Miller rounded out the top five.

"It feels excellent," said Dobesh, driver of the Ron's Auto Repair #2x after the victory.  "It was probably one of the best feeling cars I've had in a long time.  It was wide open most of the race."  The heat races were won by Miller and Kevin Droll.

Rick Goth and Gary Brown Jr. battled back in forth for the lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature in the early laps of the event.  Goth took the initial lead, but Brown laid claims on the spot at the start of the second lap.  Goth reclaimed the top spot down the backstretch on lap three.  On the fifth lap, Brown used the high side and charged back around Goth and into the lead. After that, Brown was unstoppable as he would hold on to take his sixth straight feature win at Lake County Speedway.  Mark DeBoer had never visited the track before competing for the first time in Saturday's event.  DeBoer made several late race passes and finished a strong second place.  Third went to Goth followed by Don Bickett.  Scott Freet finished fifth.  Bickett took the checkered flag in the heat race.

The lead of the Sportsmen feature traded hands several times, and when the dust settled and the smoke cleared it was Matt Ayres taking his first win of the season. Rick Vander Weide charged from twelfth to finish a close second followed by Daryl Green.  Fourth went to Kevin Spurgin and Daryl Reverts finished fifth.  Chuck Harming won the "B" feature.  The heat races went to Brad James, Richard Holbrook and Mark Janke.

Adam Thielbar led the entire distance of the Hobby Stock feature to cross the finish line in first for the second time this season.  Three cars were battling for second place on the final lap, and as they came for the checkered, they would tangle sending cars in all directions.  Second place went to Mike McGillivray and Justin Lebahn took third.  Bob DeBoer crossed the line fourth and Nick Bahr rounded out the top five.  Gary Ganyo, Bahr and McGillivray took wins in the heat races.

The team of Ryan Ellingson/Rick Dresson led the entire distance of the Deuces Wild feature to take their second win of the year.  Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon finished second followed by Shawn Ryan/Chad Larson and Jeff Claussen/Jason Lunders.  Kelly Krueger/Mark Barkowski finished fifth.  The heat races went to Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman and Erik Kludt/Chris Nelson.

Craig Delfs was first to cross the finish line in the Street Stock feature, but his car would fail post race inspections.  That gave Leslie Arnett her second straight feature win.  Brian Heiman was second followed by Barney Fuller.  Fourth place went to Leonard Shugars and Brandon Kampa rounded out the top five.  Arnett and Kampa won the heat races.
