(July 13, 2002-Madison, SD) Chuck McGillivray and Randy Droescher, two long time racing veterans, brought the Sprint Cars to the green flag of Lake County Speedway's main event, the sprint car "A" feature. McGillivray edged Droescher for the lead entering the first turn. Ron Dobesh was charging hard from the fourth row, and moved into fourth place on lap two. Shortly after taking fourth, the steering on the Ron's Auto Repair #5 of Dobesh broke sending the car into the turn four wall. Dobesh was uninjured, but the car would go to the infield behind the wrecker.
Out front, McGillivray was untouchable as he maneuvered through lap traffic effortlessly and would lead all 15 laps to put the Dairy Queen #101 in victory lane for the second time this year. Droescher finished second followed by Kim Muntefering. Fourth place went to Mike McMahan and John Miller took fifth. The heat races were won by Muntefering, McMahan and Gary Johnson.
Rick Goth took the early lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature, with Chris Ellingson moving into second. Ellingson would lose the second spot when he slowed with mechanical problems on lap two. That moved Gary Brown Jr. into second on the restart.
On the fourth lap around the speedway, Brown pulled door to door with Goth and the two cars would run side by side for several laps. Not able to take the lead using the bottom of the track, Brown moved to the high side and again the top two cars were dead even for the lead. On the exit of turn two on lap 11, Goth pulled his Century 21 #90 into the top spot, but one lap later, Brown used the cushion to motor into the lead. The Plimpton Drywall #22 of Brown would hold on to take his fifth straight win. Goth took second and Perry Tschetter crossed the line in third. Fourth place went to JJ Zebell and Scott Freet rounded out the top five.
"I kind of felt him out when I was in second," said Brown after the win. "I have a lot of trust in Rick (Goth) and when you have a lot of trust it's pretty easy to run side by side like that." The Short Track Stock Car heat races were won by Freet and Tschetter.
Kevin Spurgin held the early lead of the Sportsmen feature, but the car on the move was Richard Holbrook. Holbrook started sixth, took fourth on lap one, took third from Dustin Evink on lap two, and then passed Josh Schmidt for second place in turn four of lap four. Spurgin continued to lead until his right rear tire went flat on lap nine. Spurgin would have to go to the work area for a new tire, and that gave the restart lead to Holbrook. Holbrook led the final three laps to claim his second win of the year. The PC Doctor # 6 of Rick Vander Weide charged from the twelfth starting position to take second. Evink finished third followed by Brad James. Jamie Tieszen crossed the line in fifth. The consolation feature was won by Gary Ganyo. The heat races were won by Evink, James and Tieszen.
Mike Kiggins led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature to take his first win of the season. Justin Olson finished second and Bob DeBoer took third. Jeff Beck raced from thirteenth to take fourth and Darren Duffy finished fifth. Beck was the winner of the "B" feature. Olson, Scott Barkowski, and Andy Ullom were victorious in heat race competition.
Leslie Arnett led every lap of the Street Stock feature to take her third win of the season. Jeremy Fedeler finished second followed by Craig Delfs. Barney Fuller took fourth and Brandon Kampa finished fifth. Fedeler and Fuller won the heat races.
The team of the Shawn Ryan/Chad Larsen took the lead on the fourth lap of the Deuces Wild feature and the 2000 track champions would go on to take their first win of the season. Jason Schwader/Danielle Kinkhammer finished second followed by Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon. The forth spot went to Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman and Kelly Kruger/Mark Barkowski finished fifth. Ryan/Larson, Erik Kludt/Chris Nelson and Ryan Ellingson/Rick Dresson took wins in the heat races.
