Miller Takes Win at Lake County Speedway

By Shawn Neisteadt

(July 6, 2002-Madison, SD) With the crowd on their feet, John Miller and Ryan Bickett brought the 360 Sprint Cars to the drop of the green flag for the main event.

Miller got the edge going into the first turn and took the lead. Ryan Bickett was slicing and dicing in the top five when he drove his Duffy Farms #17B off turn number one. The red flag would fly, but the incident turned out to be a light wreck, and Bickett was able to return to the race. Chuck McGillivray moved into fourth place on the resulting restart. McGillivray continued his prowl as he took third place entering the first turn.

With six laps completed, the yellow flag waved when Kevin Droll lost the handle in turn four and spun out. Droll and the rest of the field restarted and on the ninth lap, Josh Holt was able to take fourth away from Kim Muntefering. The yellow flag waved again for Droll as the mechanical problems in the front end stopped his #22x against the turn four wall.

That put the field nose to tale for the restart with only four laps remaining, but Miller was untouchable as he would pick up his first Lake County Speedway victory since 1994. Gary Johnson finished second followed by McGillivray and Holt. Muntefering rounded out the top five. "We've really been struggling this season," said Miller, the defending Huset's Speedway track champion. "It makes me nervous," he added on the cautions periods in the race. "Any time you have yellows you get nervous." The heat races were won by Muntefering and Mike McMahan.

Gary Brown Jr. used 11 laps to go from last to the lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature. Brown moved into the top five on lap five. Then, on lap seven Brown passed Perry Tschetter for fourth. One lap later, Chris Ellingson fell victim to Brown as he took third place. One the eleventh trip around the speedway, Brown ran the cushion and passed JJ Zebell and Dwayne Bowden to rocket from third to the lead. Brown led the final four laps to claim his fourth straight Lake County Speedway victory. Bowden took second followed by Zebell. Rick Goth came back from a flat tire to take fourth and Don Bickett rounded out the top five. Zebell and Scott Freet won the heat races.

After 12 laps of racing, the finish of the Sportsmen feature was settled by a couple of inches. Mark Janke held the restart lead with two laps to go, but when the green waved Brad James would pull door to door with the leader. As they exited turn two, James edged into the lead. The race was not over though. On the white flag lap, Janke pulled next to James. The two exited turn four dead even, but at the finish line James was able to inch out Janke for the win. Janke was second with Chuck Harming third. The fourth spot went to Matt Ayres and Richard Holbrook took fifth. James and Janke were the heat race winners.

After leading most of the Hobby Stock feature, Aaron Penning would lose a wheel with less than one lap until the checkereds. That gave the restart lead to Nick Bahr who would hold on to take his third win of the season. Jeff Beck used a final turn pass to take second and Mike Kiggins was third. Bob DeBoer came from tenth to finish fourth and Rick Wibeto took fifth. Darren Duffy won the consolation feature. The heat races were won by Steve Eliason, Walter Kiggins and Penning.

The team of Erik Kludt and Chris Nelson made the most of their pole position start in the Deuces Wild feature to take their first win. Ryan Rllingson/Rick Dresson took second followed by Kelly Kruger/Mark Barkowski and Shawn Ryan/Chad Larsen. The team of Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman finished fifth. The teams of Ellingson/Dressen and Shawn Callies/Jason Schwader won the heat races.

Brandon Kampa led the entire distance of the Street Stock feature to claim his first Lake County Speedway victory. Leslie Arnett took second followed by Jeremy Fedeler. Fourth went to Barney Fuller and Craig Delfs finished fifth. Arnett and Joe Tieszen won the heat races.
