(July 4, 2002-Madison, SD) Chuck McGillivray would bring a capacity crowd to its feet as he took his fiftieth career Lake County Speedway win.
Josh Holt took the lead of sprint car feature when the green flag fell. Coming off the fourth turn to complete the first lap, McGillivray, a nine time track champion, would use the cushion to take over the lead. McGillivray entered lap traffic on the seventh trip around the speedway. "I've been around racing long enough to not get excited and take myself out," said McGillivray about maneuvering though the slower traffic.
The races only interruption was a caution with five laps to go. Holt, who was still in the second position, had the top wing collapse on his #16v and he would stop on the speedway.
McGillivray would hold off hard charges from Kory Rawstern on the remaining five laps to take the milestone victory. Rawstern took second and Joe Riedel took third. Gary Johnson took fourth and John Miller used a last lap pass to round out the top five. "It feels like a long time coming," said McGillivray, the track's winningest active driver. "I got 49 and I couldn't get the monkey off my back for 50." McGillivray also added that this win came 15 years, 11 months and 14 days since his first ever sprint car win, a stat he remembers because that was the day his daughter was born. Johnson and Randy Droescher won the heat races.
Gary Brown Jr. led all 15 laps of the Short Track Stock Car feature to take his third win in a row. JJ Zebell took the second place and Rick Goth took third. Chris Ellingson finished fourth with Dwayne Bowden rounding out the top five. The heat race wins went to Goth and Zebell.
Chuck Harming was out front and hauling as he led all 12 laps to take his second Nordstrom's Sportsmen feature win of the season. Kevin Spurgin challenged for the lead but settled for a second place finish. Third went to Josh Schmidt and Jeff Hoogendoorn came from the fifth row to take fourth. Dustin Evink took fifth. Schmidt and Evink took wins in heat race action.
Bob DeBoer took the lead of the Hobby Stock feature on a restart at the halfway point and would never look back en route to his first career Lake County Speedway victory. Justin Lebahn took second followed by Mike Kiggins. Mike McGillivray was fourth and Rick Wibeto rounded out the top five. Aaron Penning, Nick Bahr and Kiggins won the heat races. Jon DeBoer won the "B" feature.
Shawn Callies/Jason Schwader made the most of their pole position start to take their third Deuced Wild win of the year. Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman finished second followed by Shawn Ryan/Chad Larson. Fourth went to Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon and the team of Ryan Ellingson/Rick Dressen rounded out the top five. Callies/Schwader and Ryan/Larson won the heat races.
Leslie Arnett pulled off her second FWD Street Stock feature win of the season. Jeremy Fedeler took second and Craig Delfs finished third. Fourth went to Brandon Kampa and Joe Tieszen rouned out the top five. The heat races were won by Arnett and Fedeler.
