The "Iceman" Wins at Lake County

By Shawn Neisteadt

(June 29, 2002-Madison, SD)  Randy Droescher had not been to the Lake County Speedway victory lane since July of 1994, but his dry spell was to come to its end Saturday night.

Droescher came from the inside of the second row and used a daring move to take the top spot entering the first turn.  Mike McMahan jumped into the second position, but the Mike's Jack and Jill #16v of Josh Holt soon overtook McMahan and the position.  Holt, an 18 year old driver, would make several runs at the top spot, but the 31 year veteran, Droescher would hold him off to park the Ethanol Products #24 in the LCS winners circle for the first time in nearly 8 years.  Holt would finish a strong second place.  McMahan brought the Citywide Insulation #R19 to the line in third.  Gary Johnson came from the back row to take fourth and Chuck McGillivray rounded out the top five.

"We just got a good, lucky start on the take off," said Droescher, better known as 'the iceman' after the win.  "I had to slow down to go fast," he added.  The heat races were won by Johnson and Ryan Bickett.

Perry Tschetter took the lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature at the drop of the green flag.  Tschetter led the opening lap, but Gary Brown would snag the top spot from him as they exited turn four to complete the second circuit.  The yellow came out for the first time when Scott Freet suffered transmission problems with four laps counted.

On the resulting restart, Rick Goth would rocket from fourth into the second place.  Chris Ellingson rode the rim of the speedway to take the third place on lap 10.  With three laps to go, Ellingson passed Goth for second, but Goth was able to come back and retake the second spot.

Brown led 14 laps to take his second Lake County feature victory in a row.  Goth finished second with Ellingson just behind him in third.  Tschetter finished fourth with Don Bickett charging from the back to take fifth.  Tschetter and Freet were victorious in the heat races.

Matt Ayres jumped into the lead of the Nordstrom's Sportsmen feature, but luck would not be on his side.  With one lap down, the caution flag waved and Ayres was caught up in an incident.  The #6x of Ayres would suffer significant damage that would cause the car to be parked for the rest of the night.  That gave the lead to Jaime Tieszen.

Kevin Spurgin made several challenges for the top spot, but would never be able to overhaul Tieszen.  Tieszen crossed the finish line just inches ahead of Spurgin to claim his first ever victory.  Spurgin took second.  Josh Schmidt took third place followed by Billy Prouty.  Finishing fifth and qualifying for the Nordstrom's Pit Stop Challenge race was Brad James.  The Sportsmen heat races were won by Ayres, Schmidt and Jeremiah Jordahl.

Josh Lamer led the Hobby Stock feature until he lost the handle of his #65 and spun out.  That would set the stage for a two lap shootout for the trophy.  As the field took the white flag, Mike McGillivray and Jeff Beck battled door to door, but Beck would go up the track in turn one and lose several positions.  McGillivray took his second feature win of the season.  Bob DeBoer came back from an early race occurrence to finish in the second place. Steve Eliason finished third.  Rick Wibeto took fourth.  Johnny Monsees used a provisional to come from fifteenth to fifth.  The heat races were won by McGillivray, Beck and Walter Kiggins.  Andy Ullom won the "B" main.

Craig Delfs made the most of his pole position start to take his fifth FWD Street Stock feature win of the season.  Joe Tieszen took second.  Third went to Leslie Arnett.  Jeremy Fedeler and Brett Lease rounded out the top five.  The heat race was won by Arnett.

The team of Shawn Callies/Jason Schwader took their second Deuces Wild feature win of the season.  Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon took second place with the team of Kelly Krueger/Mark Barkowski taking third.  The teams of Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman and Erik Kludt/Chris Nelson rounded out the top five.  Heat race wins were scored by Callies/Schwader and Jeff Claussen/Jason Lunders.

Madison Discount Liquor presents a special Independence Day event on Thursday at Lake County Speedway.  All six classed will be in competition and the night will be capped off with a fireworks display.
