(June 22, 2002-Madison, SD) Ron Dobesh and Randy Droescher led the large field of NMRA 360 Sprint Cars to the green flag of the feature, and they would battle all 18 laps.
Dobesh grabbed the lead at the drop of the green, but Droescher took it entering the first turn. On lap two, Chuck McGillivray moved into the fourth spot. On the fifth trip around the speedway, Dobesh dove under Droescher and snagged the lead. Eight laps had been completed when John Miller spun his Express Copy & Printing #24M in the fourth turn. On the restart, McGillivray gave up the fourth position when he hit the restart cone.
When the green flag flew again, Droescher dove to the bottom of Dobesh entering turn one, but Dobesh used the high groove to maintain the lead. Kory Rawstern and Mike McMahan exchanged the fifth position numerous times over the next four laps. On lap 12, Rawstern slipped a little too high and allowed McMahan to take the fifth spot. Mechanical problems stalled Miller on lap 14 and again the caution waved.
The caution period set up an exciting four lap shootout for the win. Dobesh went back to the high groove while Droescher stuck to the bottom. The two raced side by side for the final four laps. Coming for the checkereds, Droescher used the short way around the speedway to pass Dobesh exiting turn four, but momentum would carry Dobesh by Droescher to give the win to Dobesh by half a car. Droescher finished second. Gary Johnson finished third followed by Bryan Dobesh and McMahan.
"It feels real good," commented Ron Dobesh, pilot of the Ron's Auto Repair #5, after the win. "It's nice to start up front and finish up front," added Dobesh.
"I don't mind taking second when I can go wheel to wheel with someone," added Droescher. Droescher and Johnson won the heat races.
Perry Tschetter took the early lead of the Short Track Stock Car 15 lap feature. After battling side by side with Chris Ellingson for the second spot, Gary Brown took the lead from Tschetter on lap four while exiting the fourth turn. Rick Goth took second place on the next lap and went in pursuit of Brown. Brown would be untouchable though on his way to his first LCS win of the season. Goth finished second followed by Ellingson. Don Bickett crossed the line in fourth with Scott Freet taking fifth. The Short Track Stock Car heat races were won by Goth and Bickett.
Chuck Harming led the final eight laps of the Nordstrom's Sportsmen feature to claim his first win of the season. Josh Schmidt made several challenges for the lead but would settle for a second place finish. Kevin Spurgin finished third with Richard Holbrook taking fourth. Brad James rounded out the top five. Jeff Hoogendoorn, Ryan Mulder and James won the heat races.
Johnny Monsees moved from the third position to the lead of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature on lap six and would lead the second half of the race to claim his second career LCS win. Monsees passed nine cars on the way to the win. Mike McGillivray took second place after starting in ninth. Justin Lebahn took the third place followed by Justin Olson. Rick Wibeto finished fifth. Jeff Beck won the consolation feature. Olson, Lebahn and Josh Lamer took the heat race wins.
Leslie Arnett made it a clean sweep in FWD Street Stock action. Arnett won the heat race and led the entire distance of the feature to claim her first win of the year. Jeremy Fedeler took second followed by Barney Fuller. Fourth went to Craig Delfs and Joe Tieszen rounded out the top five.
Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman led the entire Deuces Wild feature to take their second win of the season. Ryan Ellingson/Rick Dressen finished second followed by the teams of Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon and Cody Brown/Chris Bunkers. The team of Skeeter Hanson and Ian Alverson finished fifth. The teams of Ellingson/Dressen and Shawn Ryan/Chad Larson won the heat races.
Lake County Speedway hosts the same six classed of racing next Saturday. Lake County also races on July 4 with all classes in competition. The green flag flies at 8 pm sharp.
