(June 8, 2002-Madison, SD) Heavy rains the night before would not cause the racing action to be canceled at Lake County Speedway. The track crew worked all day long to prepare the soggy facility for racing action.
Mike McMahan took the lead at the drop of the green flag in the NMRA 360 Sprint feature. Kory Rawstern settled into the second spot until Josh Holt took the position with one lap completed. Chuck McGillivray and Mitch Runge battled back and forth for the fifth position on the fifth and sixth laps. The battle was interrupted when Runge spun his #28 to avoid Rawstern who was losing power. The yellow flag waved, but both drivers were able to return to action.
McMahan had his Citywide Insulation #R19 on a string and was untouchable en route to his second win of the season. "It seems like after you get the first one, they come easier," commented McMahan after the win. Taking second place was Holt followed by Kim Muntefering. Fourth place went to McGillivray with Ron Dobesh charging from the back of the pack to round out the top five. Heat race wins went to Rawstern and Joe Riedel.
Don Bickett took the early lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature, but racing was interrupted three laps into the race when Richard Palmer spun in the fourth turn. On the restart, Gary Brown rocketed from fifth into second and began to challenge Bickett for the top spot. Six laps had been completed when the caution waved again. This time Scott Freet and JJ Zebell had tangled and spun.
The restart is what Perry Tschetter needed. As Bickett and Brown resumed their battle for the lead, Tschetter went to the extreme high groove and passed both cars to move from third to first. Tschetter led the last nine laps to take his second feature win in a row. Bickett took second just inched ahead of Brown. Freet returned to the front of the pack for a fourth place finish. Rick Goth returned from a flat tire to take fifth. Short Track Stock car heat race wins went to Brown and Freet.
Richard Holbrook led all 12 laps of the Sportsmen feature to claim his first career victory. "That was fun. It was a blast," said Holbrook after his victory. Matt Ayres finished second with third going to Jeremiah Jordahl. Jeff Hoogendoorn finished fourth with Jamie Tieszen rounding out the top five. Holbrook, Hoogendoorn and Brad James to wins in heat race action.
In NMRA Hobby Stock action, Mike McGillivray took the lead of the feature on the lap eight restart when race leader Darren Duffy had a tire go flat. McGillivray held on over the final four laps to claim the win. Bob DeBoer finished second after a large oil fire on his #9B the previous night. Third place went to Scott Borkowski. Finishing fourth was Jeff Beck. Johnny Monsees finished fifth after winning the "B" feature to transfer to the main event. The red flag flew on lap 10 when Walter Kiggins flipped in the third turn. Kiggins was unharmed. The Hobby Stock heat races went to McGillivray, Borkowski and Duffy.
The team of Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon used a last lap pass to take their third Deuces Wild feature win of the season. Cody Brown/Chris Bunkers took second with Kelly Krueger/Mark Barkowski in third. The teams of Ryan Ellingson/Rick Dressen and Jeff Claussen/Jason Lunders rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to the teams of Shawn Callies/Jason Schwader and Erik Kludt/Chris Nelson.
Leslie Arnett took the early lead of the Street Stock feature, but transmission problems soon slowed her #28G and allowed Jeremy Fedeler to take the lead and go on to his second win of the year. Joe Tieszen took second followed by Barney Fuller. Arnett won the heat race.
