(June 1, 2002-Madison, South Dakota) On a night that had several red flags and rollovers, Mitch Runge would drive home with a win.
Mitch Runge came from the outside of the second row and took the lead from pole sitter Joe Riedel one lap into the NMRA 360 sprint "A" feature. From there on the Texaco Pocket Rocket #28 was on a string and untouchable. Chuck McGillivray shot from fourth into second on the third circuit of the speedway. The leaders ran into traffic on lap five, but Runge was too fast for the field to catch.
"I was just going," commented Runge after taking the win. "I was giving it everything she had."
The win was Runge's first ever win at Lake County Speedway. McGillivray finished second. Josh Holt took third with Kory Rawstern charging from seventh to take fourth. Kim Muntefering rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Riedel and Mike McMahan.
Perry Tschetter grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag for the Short Track Stock Car main event. Three laps into the 15 lap event, Rick Goth had charged from fifth and was in second. Chris Ellingson was in third after starting seventh. With four laps completed, Gary Brown slowed on the speedway and went to the infield to change a tire. The tire was replaced and Brown restarted at the rear of the field.
Brown charged back to the front immediately. On lap seven Brown took fourth and set his sights on the battle for second between Goth and Ellingson. With four laps remaining, Ellingson edged in front of Goth for the second spot. With two laps to go, Goth lost third as Brown took the position.
Perry Tschetter took the checkereds just ahead of Brown, who stole the second spot on the final lap. Ellingson finished third with Goth in fourth. The fifth spot went to Scott Freet. Heat race wins went to Brown and Goth.
After battling for several laps three wide, Kevin Spurgin took the lead of the Sportsmen Stock Car feature with two laps remaining. Spurgin had started in the fifth row. Josh Schmidt used a last lap pass to take second. Third went to Matt Ayres followed by Mark Janke. Gary Gonyo started last, sixteenth, and charged forward to round out the top five. The race was red flagged on lap seven when Dustin Evink flipped his #76 in turn three. Evink walked away uninjured. Janke, Brad James, and Richard Holbrook took wins in heat race action.
Nick Bahr took the lead of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature four laps into the event and never looked back en route to his second feature win of the year. Darren Duffy took second followed by Justin Lebahn. Rick Wibeto finished inches behind Lebahn to take fourth with Johnny Monsees rounding out the top five. After flipping in his heat race, Bob DeBoer returned to take the win in the "B" feature. Heat race wins were scored by Duffy, Wibeto, and Josh Lamer.
The team of Kevin Prussman/Myron Prussman led the entire distance of the Deuces Wild feature to take their first win of the season. Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon finished second with Shawn Ryan/Chad Larson taking third. The teams of Adam Terveen/Kurt Heinemann and Ryan Ellingson/Rick Dressen rounded out the top five. The teams of Prussman/Prussman and Kelly Krueger/Mark Barkowski took heat race wins.
The Front Wheel Drive Street Stock feature treated fans to three and four wide racing during the entire event. Craig Delfs took the win with a three wide battle for second just behind him. Jeremy Fedeler edged out Leslie Arnett and Joe Tieszen for the second spot. Arnett won the heat race.
