Holt Wins First; Freet Returns to Victory Lane

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Madison, SD-May 25, 2002)  One week after Lake County Speedway reached several milestones, including its 400th different winner.  The track gates opened for another night of exciting racing.

Josh Holt and Mike McMahan led the NMRA 360 Sprints Cars to the drop of the green for the main event.  The pair ran side by side until Holt grabbed the lead on the backstretch.  Four laps into the 14 lap affair, Mitch Runge had already shot from eighth and took fourth from Kim Muntefering.  On the next revolution, Chuck McGillivray overtook McMahan for the second position.

Meanwhile, 18 year old Holt continued to lead.  Holt ran into lap traffic on lap seven.  Ten laps had been completed when Runge advanced to third by passing McMahan.

The field would not be able to touch Holt as he led every lap on his way to claiming his first ever win at Lake County Speedway.  McGillivray finished second.  Runge came to the stripe third with McMahan and Muntefering rounding out the top five.  "The car was right on the money.  It was perfect," said Holt, driver of the Mike's Jack and Jill #16v.

Heat race wins went to Muntefering and McGillivray.

In Short Track Stock Car action, Perry Tschetter rocketed from the third row to take the lead as the field exited turn two.  Tschetter led until Scott Freet took the top spot entering the first turn three laps into the event.  Tschetter battled back and retook the lead on the backstretch.  One lap later, the battled continued as Freet maneuvered by Tschetter entering turn three.

Eight laps into the race, Chris Ellingson was now challenging Tschetter, this time for second.  The two swapped the position several times until Ellingson finally held onto the spot on lap 12.

Freet held on to take the win with Ellingson second.  Third went to Tschetter.  Rick Goth took fourth and Jeff Hertel rounded out the top five.  "Has it been that long," asked Freet after being informed it had been four years since his last trip to victory lane.  "If you can get a top five in this class, you have nothing to be ashamed of," added Freet.

Several drivers led the Sportsmen "A" feature, but Al Barnhart claimed the spot with four laps remaining and held on to take the win.  Barnhart had started in the fourth row.  Dustin Evink led the seventh lap and finished second.  Chuck Harming finished third.  Richard Holbrook came from his provisional starting position in the eighth row all the way to fourth.  Josh Schmidt rounded out the top five.  Jeremiah Jordahl won the "B" feature.  Heat race wins went to Evink, Harming, and Matt Ayres.

Steve Eliason took the lead of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature from Josh Lamer on a lap five restart.  Eliason held the lead until mechanical problems ended his race on a lap 10 restart.  As Eliason pulled off the speedway, it gave the lead to Mike McGillivray.  McGillivray had charged from the back row to take the lead.

As the field came to the checkereds, McGillivray broke loose exiting turn four.  Adam Thielbar and Scott Barkowski pulled alongside of McGillivray and it was a three way dash to the finish.  McGillivray's problems were not over yet though.  McGillivray tagged the wall and that sent the car into a high, wild flip on the front stretch.

Crossing the line first and taking the win was Thielbar.  Borkowski was inches behind in second.  McGillivray crossed the finish line third while flipping.  Fourth went to Johnny Monsees with Aaron Penning taking fifth.  McGillivray won the "B" feature.  Heat wins were scored by Eliason, Lamer, and Nick Bahr.

In the Deuces Wild main event, the teams of Shawn Ryan/Chad Larson and Tom Vetsch/Neil Meunchow tangled on the opening lap.  Both cars tumbled wildly in the third turn, but all walked away uninjured.

The team of Ryan Ellingson/Rick Dresson took the win.  Shawn Callies/Jason Schwader took second.  The teams of Danny Harmon/Bill Harmon, Erik Kludt/Chris Nelson, and Cody Brown/Chris Bunkers rounded out the top five.

In the FWD Street Stock feature, Jeremy Fedeler took his first win of the season.  Craig Delfs finished second with Joe Tieszen and Leslie Arnett rounding out the order.
