McMahan, Ellingson, James, Bahr claim first career wins

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Madison, SD-May 18, 2002)  After one week off due to Mother Nature, racing resumed at the Lake County Speedway, and it was a night of many firsts.

Randy Droescher took the early lead of the NMRA 360 Sprint Car main event.  Droescher was able to pull away from fellow front row starter, Josh Holt, as Holt and Mike McMahan battled side by side for the second position.  With four laps in the books, McMahan finally pulled ahead of Holt and held sole possession of the second spot.  Three laps later, McMahan had reeled in Droescher and they battled side by side.

Eight laps had been counted when McMahan used the low side to slide by Droescher and grab the lead entering turn three.  On the next circuit, Chuck McGillivray maneuvered into the third position, but Holt battled back to reclaim the spot from the nine time track champion.

McMahan held on to take his first career Lake County Speedway feature win.  Droescher edged out Holt for second.  McGillivray finished fourth and Mitch Runge rounded out the top five.  "I've been chasing it for years," commented McMahan, driver of the Citywide Insulation #R19 after the win.

Heat race wins went to Holt and Bryan Dobesh.

Another first career win was grabbed by Chris Ellingson in the Short Track Stock Car feature.  Ellingson lined up eighth and used eight laps to overtake Perry Tschetter for the lead.  Previously, Ellingson was the 2000 LCS Sportsmen Stock Car track champion and had scored 8 feature wins in that division.

Gary Brown passed eight cars to finish second with Tschetter taking third.  Fourth went to JJ Zebell and Rick Goth rounded out the top five.  Heat race wins went to Tschetter and Scott Freet.

Brad James led all 12 laps of the Sportsmen main event to claim two first ever marks in the history books.  The win was the first career trip to the winner's circle for James as well as the first time a truck has ever won at the speedway.  Jeremiah Jordahl finished second with Kevin Spurgin taking third.  Gary Ganyo charged from tenth to take fourth and Matt Ayres finished fifth.  Heat race wins went to Josh Schmidt, James, and Ayres.

Yet another career first happened in the NMRA Hobby Stock "A" feature.  Nick Bahr took the lead three laps into the event when mechanical problems forced Josh Lamer to relinquish the top spot.  Bahr, a recent graduate of the Deuces Wild division, never looked back on his way to taking his first career hobby stock win.  Rick Wibeto charged from the sixth row to finish second.  Mike McGillivray finished third followed by Johnny Monsees.  Jeff Beck rounded out the top five.  Justin Olson won the "B" feature.  Heat race wins went to Wibeto, McGillivray, and Walter Kiggins.

The team of Danny Harmon and Bill Harmon used a last lap pass to score their second feature win of the young season in the Deuces Wild feature.  The team of Kelly Krueger-Mark Barkowski finished second.  Third went to Kevin Prussmen-Myran Prussman.  The teams of Erik Kludt-Chris Nelson and Tom Vetch-Neil Meunchow rounded out the top five.  Heat race wins went to the teams of Kludt-Nelson and Prussman-Prussman.

When the four wade battle settled in the Front Wheel Drive Street Stock feature, it was Craig Delfs taking the checkereds.  Jeremy Fedeler took second followed by Joe Tieszen and Leslie Arnett.  Delfs completed the sweep, as he had also won the heat race.

The same six classes are in competition at Lake County Speedway at 8 pm next Saturday.
