Ingle Tops Lake County Opener

By Shawn Neisteadt

( May 4, 2002-Madison, SD) Lake County Speedway opened its gates for the start of the 2002 season May 4. A full grandstand peered over a bursting infield of cars. Six classes of competition took to the speedway to kick off the new season.

Kevin Ingle made the most of his outside front row starting spot to break into the new year with a victory in the NMRA 360 sprint cars. Defending track champion, Kory Rawstern made several attempts to overtake Ingle, but the Prostrollo's #2 would hold on through lap traffic to take the win. Rawstern came to the finish in second. Nine time track champion, Chuck McGillivray, rocketed into the third position on the second lap of the 15 lap affair. McGillivray held of all charges from Kim Muntefering to finish third. Muntefering worked his way from the fourth row to take the fourth spot. Bryan Dobesh rounded out the top five after starting back in the fifth row. Sprint car heat win went to Rawstern and Mike McMahan.

"I expected to just hold my own. I didn't expect to win," said Rick Goth after taking the win in the Short Track Stock Car feature. Goth, the defending Sportsmen division track champion, drew the pole position for his first career event in the division. At the drop of the green, Goth's # 90 pulled away from fellow front row starter Duane Bowden. Gary Brown, the 2001 National NMRA point champion, started in ninth in the event, but charged forward to second as the fifth lap of the event was completed. Brown was able to close the gap between himself and Goth, but a failed final turn slide job would bring Brown home with second. Chris Ellingson, also in his first race in the class since graduating from the Sportsmen class, finished a strong third. Bowden held on the take fourth and Don Bickett piloted his #17 to a top five finish. Heat races for the Short Track Stock Cars went to Brown and Ellingson.

Luck was not on the side of Richard Holbrook in the Sportsmen Stock Car feature. Holbrook started out strong, and on the second circuit of the speedway, assumed the lead from the sixth starting spot. Holbrook held the lead for the next nine laps, but would suffer a suspension failure on the white flag lap.

Holbrook's misfortune would be Al Barnhart's big break as he would hold on in the two lap shoot out. Barnhart's win made track history, as for the first time in the track's 42 year existence, a family has had three generations take feature wins. Barnhart's grandfather and uncle claimed wins in the past. Kevin Spurgin finished a close second. Gary Gonyo took third place followed by Mark Janke and Chuck Harming to round out the top five. Holbrook, Harming, and Gonyo took wins in the Sportsmen heat races.

Rick Wibeto overtook Mike Kiggins to take the win of the NMRA Hobby Stock "A" feature. Wibeto, who had started tenth, and Kiggins, who had held the lead for 5 laps, entered turn three side by side on the final lap. As the two cars exited the corner, it was Wibeto's #8w hooking up to inch out Kiggins for the win. Following them to the stripe was Justin Lebahn, Johnny Monsees, and Darren Duffy. Heat races for the Hobby Stocks went to Wibeto, Kiggins, and Nick Bahr. The "B" feature was won by Steve Eliason.

The team of Danny Harmon and Bill Harmon led the second half of the Deuces Wild feature to open their season in victory lane. The 2000 track champions, Shawn Ryan and Chad Larsen finished second. The teams of Tom Vetsch/Neil Mueunchow, Ryan Ellingson/Rick Dressen, and Adam Terveen/Kurt Heinemann rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to the pairs of Vetch/Mueunchow, Harmon/Harmon, and Cody Brown/Chris Bunkers.

Craig Delfs made it a clean sweep in the Front Wheel Drive Street Stock division by taking the heat race win and the feature honors. Second place went to Leslie Arnett. Jeremy Fedeler finished third with Joe Tieszen taking fourth.

Racing resumes at the Lake County Speedway next Saturday night at 8 o'clock.
