Martens wins take home number four...

By KJAM SpeedZone host Zach Nelson from KJAM Radio, Madison

After competing in last weekends Ninth Annual Huset's Speedway Gold Cup, the 360 sprint cars were ready to get back to action at the Lake County Speedway.  There was only one caution in the 15 lap feature and that was on the last lap as Steve Haman spun out in turn one on the Checkered flag lap.  Kevin Ingle got by pole sitter Eric McGillivray and led until lap 12 when Doug Martens passed Ingle on the outside of turn four after Ingle was slowed up by Joe Reidel's car to take the lead for good.  Martens led four laps en route to his fourth win of the season and fifth straight top five finish.  Kevin Ingle hung on to finish second with Mike Ellingson finishing in third, fourth went to Eric McGillivray and Mike McMahan rounded out the top five.

Late Model track championship contender Rob Anderson just needed a nice smooth consistant finish.  What he got was a spinout and barrel roll, ten to fifteen feet in the air and a red flag to start off the Late Model Stock Car A-Feature from last Saturday Night at the Lake County Speedway.  Half way through the first lap Russ Peterson's left front tire gave way, causing the field to check up.  Anderson got the number 85 Dells Diesel Service car sideways and then the flipping began.  While Anderson started to roll over, Moose Schuldt had nowhere to go but into the crashing car.  That shot by Schuldt sent the 85 car high into the air.  It then crashed down hard onto it's roof and rolled one more time before coming to rest upright.  Anderson, Schuldt and Peterson were all O.K. and uninjured.  That red flag was only one of two caution periods.  The last caution waved for Matt Steuerwald.  He got loose coming off of turn two and was hit in the rear of the car.  That caused the Furby Performance One Chevy Malibu to slide into the wall and bend up some right side suspension parts, on Steuerwald's number 3 car.  J.J. Zebell led until lap two when Don Bickett got by to lead laps three and four.  Brad Wollman, who started eighth led lap five and then Madison's Scott Freet got into the lap leading act by passing Wollman on lap six.  Freet looked to be on his way to a one car lenght win, when Bickett got to the inside of Freet on the back straight to take his second feature win of the year at the Lake County Speedway.  Freet led nine laps and finished second, third was Brad Wollman, Lee Schlumbohm in fourth and Curt Bauman in the five spot.

It was a rough and tough night for the top points contenders in the Sportsman division at the Lake County Speedway on Saturday Night.  There were five cautions in the Sportsman feature.  Ther fist two were on the same lap, lap five.  Chuck Harming used the chrome horn to turn Matt Ayres around on the front staight a way.  On the following restart, Ayres took part in a solo spin in turn two.  Turn four was the site of the last of the five cautions.  Caution three was on lap seven for Chris Ellingson as he went into the spin cycle courtesy of Brad Klaassen.  Lap ten held the fourth caution as Richard Holbrook scraped and smacked the front stretch wall.  The bigger problem was the logjam that followed as drivers behind Holbrook checked up.  Sportsman points leader Rick Goth got the worst end of that caution period.  His car was knocked sideways, hit in the rear , spun around and then tagged hard in the nose by Brad Klaassen.  Also on the receiving end of damage in this wreck was Madison's Mark Janke.  The Last caution waved as the field came to the checkered flag.  Chris Ellingson, Brad Klaassen, and Gary Mulder got together trying to avoid a loose Kevin Spurgin as he wiggled and wobbled coming off of turn four.  Spurgin had the pole and led up to lap 10 when Daryl Reverts snuck by in turn two on the restart.  The race ended green-white-checkered with Reverts taking his third feature win of the year.   Jeremiah Jordahl finished second, with Jeff Hertel in third, Kevin Spurgin in fourth and Gary Gonyo in the top five.

Justin Lebahn tasted victory for the second time this year as he led all twelve laps of the 12-lap Hobby Stock A-Feature from Saturday Night at the Lake County Speedway.  The Hobby Stock A-Feature featured five flags of the yellow variety.  Yellow flag number one waved for a false start, leading to a complete restart.  Caution two kept the race from starting after Cody Hall hit the wall in turn four, before the first lap was completed, again leading to a double file restart.  On lap three Dale Tomes was forced up on to the berm in turn two, lighting the yellow lamp for the third time in the race.  Six laps later on lap nine Johnny Monsees ended up outside of the race track.  His car appeared to have lost control and he just drove it out through the turn one opening.  Meanwhile, during this caution, Walter Kiggins was black flagged for a badly smoking engine on his number 3 car and forced to retire from the event.  Also Hobby Stock points leader Jeff Beck was in the pits to make some repairs and then continued on.  The last caution came out on lap 10 for Justin Selkin after his 111 car kissed the front straightaway wall and flattened his right rear tire.  Justin Lebahn held off a determined Darwin Klaassen who has really come into his own in only his second start of the year at the Lake County Speedway.  Klaassen made a move on Lebahn, but didn't have the momentum to make the pass stick.  Klaassen took second and fellow Rock Rapids Regular Jeff Hoogendorn finished third.  Madison's Mike McGillivray took home a fourth and Adam Reinhart rounded out the top five.  Points leader Jeff Beck came back to take sixth.

Nick Bahr and Chad Anderson did it again in the Dueces Wild A-Feature from last Saturday Night at the Lake County Speedway.  Team Mulder's number 14 car lost a left front tire and slowed to bring out the only caution of the six lap feature.  Bahr and Anderson took the lead on lap one after starting in the fifth spot.  It was Team Bahr's second straight win and fourth win of the 2001 season.  Team Larson of Madison finished second, followed by the Jack Boatright Duo of Hartford in third. Fourth went to Team Vetch and Myron Prussman's team rounded out the top five.  Team Jensen finished sixth with seventh going to the 3X car.  Arron Penning's team finished eighth, Team Terveen in ninth and the points leaders Jeff Claussen and Jason Lunders with a rough night finishing in the tenth spot.  Capping off the finishing field was the 26 car driven by Kermit Rose in eleventh.

In the Wild Ones feature, history was made of sorts as female driver Leslie Arneut became the first woman to win a feature in the Wild Ones Division.  She won the four lap feature.  Arneut started on the pole and held off Jeff Brown's aggressive attempts to get by the 28G Buick Regal.  Last weeks winner Eric Alfson was in the mix too.  He finished second with Brown ending up in third.  Craig Delfs, who has been the driver to beat in the up and coming division was not in competition on Saturday Night.
