Martens makes it three in a row

By Shawn Neisteadt

Madison, SD--For the past two weeks at Lake County Speedway, Doug Martens has been untouchable in his Fort Randall Casino #51.  Martens would start on the third row of the feature, and look to make it his third feature win in a row. After two unsuccessful attempts to the start of the 16-lap NMRA 360 Sprint feature, two-time track champion, Fran Bruns, driving for Ryan Bickett, took the early lead of the event.  Bruns looked to be on the way to his first LCS feature win in ten years, but the lead he had built was erased on the fourth lap when the caution waved.  Bill Martens had his car pop out of gear on the backstretch and come to a stop on the speedway. Bruns led the field to the restart, but nine-time track champion, Chuck McGillivray passed under the restart cone, resulting in a false start.   McGillivray had to go from his sixth position to the back. As racing resumed, Doug Martens, who had restarted second, dove under Bruns in turn four and came to complete the fifth lap of racing as the leader.  One lap later, Mike Ellingson took the second position away from Bruns.  The caution waved again with eight laps in the books.  While battling with Bruns for third place, Kevin Ingle spun out in turn two. The field restarted on the rear bumper of Martens, but would not be able to overtake him as he is now racing hotter than the August temperatures.  Martens led the remaining laps to claim his third win of the past three races.  Mike Ellingson finished second.  Kim Muntefering came from the ninth starting position to finish third.  Point leader, Kory Rawstern, finished fourth with McGillivray coming back to round out the top five. Heat race wins went to Ingle, McGillivray, and Gary Johnson.

J.J. Zebell jumped from the outside of the front row into the lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature, but ran out of racing room in turns three and four and ran the #29z into the outside retaining wall.  Zebell would stop on the speedway to bring out a caution with two laps completed.  The crew replaced two tires and Zebell returned to competition. The wall scraping of Zebell gave the lead to Scott Freet.  Freet would lead all the way to lap 13, until his car would have handling problems sliding the car high in turn two.  The opening was just what Rob Anderson was looking for as Anderson dove his #85 to the bottom and took the lead.  Anderson would lead the remaining two laps of the event to take home his fifth trophy of the season.  National NMRA point leader, Gary Brown Jr. finished second.  Perry Tschetter finished third with Lee Schlumbohm in fourth.  Russ Peterson crossed the line fifth. Schlumbohm and Don Bickett claimed wins in the heat races.

Mike Husman led all 12 laps of the NMRA Sportsmen feature to put the Foster's Glass-Mirror Ford Thunderbird into the winner's circle of the second week in a row.  Gary Ganyo battled Husman for the lead throughout the entire race, but would have to settle for second place.  Chuck Harming finished third with Chris Ellingson in fourth.  Richard Holbrook rounded out the top five. Ganyo, Husman, and Holbrook won the heat races.

Rick Wibeto made the most of his pole position start, as he led the every lap of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature to take home his second win in row and fourth of the season.  Adam Thielbar finished second.  Justin Selken came from seventh to finish third.  Josh Lamer came all the way from eleventh to fourth, and Mike McGillivray rounded out the top five. The heat races were won by Wibeto, Justin Lebahn, and Adam Rinehart.  Steve Eliason won the "B" feature.

Team Penning took home their first win of the season in the Deuces Wild feature.  The teams of Larson, Olson, Mulder and Claussen rounded out the top five.  The teams of Olson, Vetch, and Penning won the heat races.  Team Bahr claimed the "B" feature win.
