Riedel claims his second win of the season

By Shawn Neisteadt

Madison, SD--One week after an early morning severe thunderstorm caused the races to be canceled, racing action resumed on the high-banked speedway just south of Madison.  With the week off, the crowd was starving for racing action, and the 82 cars that pulled through the pit gate wouldn't disappoint.

Joe Riedel pulled into the lead as the green flag dropped on the NMRA 360 sprint main event, but the racing would slow as the field completed its first lap due to Kevin Ingle's stalled car.  The crew work feverishly to overcome the mechanical problems, but the Prostrollo's #2k wouldn't restart. As racing resumed, Riedel continued to pilot the Duffy Farms sprinter flawlessly in the lead, but Kim Muntefering held second position and kept Riedel within striking distance.  Steve Haman overtook the third position from Mike Ellingson.  On the third lap, Randy Droescher clipped the front stretch wall and sent the Palisades Oil machine out the track's turn one entrance.  The incident brought out the caution, but Droescher was able to restart from the rear, giving the fifth position to Kory Rawstern. Again the field restart, but problems arose as Ellingson's machine dropped off the pace suddenly on the front stretch.  In the chain reaction, Doug Martens flipped his gambler chassis to end his race.  Martens was uninjured. When the racing resumed, Muntefering slipped high in the third and fourth turn and allowed Haman to take the second spot.  Rawstern also had problems and eventually parked the car for the evening. Riedel held on to take his second win of the season.  Haman finished second, with Muntefering, Kevin Droll, and Justin Saathoff rounding out the top of the order. "Get ready for the green flag and gas it again," said Riedel on his mentality during the caution periods.  "There were a lot of tough runners behind me; everyone out here is good." Riedel and Haman won the heat races.

Curt Bauman took the lead of the Late Model Stock Car "A" main from Moose Schuldt on the backstretch on the opening lap, and wouldn't relinquish the top spot.  Schuldt held on to second place to claim his first top five finish of the season.  National NMRA point leader, Rob Anderson started tenth and finished third.  Perry Tschetter started last due to mechanical problems in the heat race, and finished fourth.  Scott Freet finished fifth. The race was cautioned for JJ Zebell as he slowed on the speedway on the first lap.  Don Bickett brought out the second caution when the #17 car stopped on the speedway on the fifth lap.  The final caution waved when Jim Petterson made contact with the wall and spun out another car. "Odd and ends things have been plaguing us," said Bauman, driver of the Skinner's Pub Buick Regal.  "Tonight things seemed to hold together." Heat race wins went to Lee Schlumbohm and Bauman.

After a first lap, six-car pile up in the Sportsmen feature, the line up changed dramatically due to the incident and several cars changing tires.  Coming off the completed restart, Rick Vander Weide piloted the PC Doctor #6 into the lead.  Chuck Harming held in a close second place and made several challenges for the lead, but lost the right rear tire on the fourth lap to end his contention for the win. Vander Weide held on to claim his first Lake County victory of the season.  Jeff Wittrock finished second.  Rick Goth came back from the lap one incident and a lap four spin out to take third.  Matt Ayres and Chris Ellingson rounded out the top five. "Just luck, I got through the first pile up," stated Vander Weide.  "Beat 88 (Harming) to the corner, that was the main objective. Harming, Jeff Ellingson and Jeremiah Jordahl claimed heat wins.  Jeff Hertel won the "B" feature.

Mike McGillivray took the lead with four laps to go in the Hobby Stock feature when Rick Webito had an engine expire.  McGillivray held on to claim his first career win.  Don Brady Jr., who held the lead for a moment before being overtaken by McGillivray, finished second.  Dale Tomes finished third with Justin Selken and Dean Dunkelberger following. Brady Jr., McGillivray and Webito won heat races.  Andy Ullom won the consolation feature.

Team Jenson put the #69 car into the winner's circle by winning the Deuces Wild main event.  The teams of Tilden, Claussen, Mulder, and Larson rounded out the top five.  The teams of Larson, Jensen, and Tilden won the heat races.  Team Mulder and Team Prussman won the "B" features.
