Ellingson celebrates his first win of the year

Madison, SD--After missing the beginning of the season because of motor problems, Mike Ellingson returned to top by winning Saturday's NMRA 360 Sprint main event. Ellingson pulled away from fellow front row started Joe Reidel as the green flag waved. Doug Martens passed Reidel on lap two giving him the second position. As Ellingson started lapping cars on lap seven, Kory Rawstern had moved from the seventh starting position to fourth and was looking for more. Rawstern overtook Reidel for the third position and set his sights on Martens on the eighth circuit around the speedway. As Rawstern was catching Martens for the second position, Martens was catching Ellingson as he struggled in the heavy lap traffic. The three cars were nose to tail as they took the white flag. Rawstern passed Martens on the low side of turn one, but wouldn't be able to overtake Ellingson, a two-time track champion, for the win. Following Ellingson, Rawstern and Martens to the line were Reidel and Kevin Ingle. Ellingson and Gary Johnson claimed wins in heat race action.
Matt Steuerwald wasted no time of the 15-lap NMRA Late Model Street Stock feature and took the lead at the start. Lee Schlumbohm put the other Furby car into the second spot and began chasing the leader. The race appeared that it was going to go flag to flag, but JJ Zebell lost control of his car and flipped coming for the white flag. Zebell, who had been running third, walked away uninjured. The restart allowed Schlumbohm to catch up to Steuerwald and provide an exiting green-white-checkered finish. The two cars raced nose to tale until Schlumbohm pulled under Steuerwald with half of a lap remaining. The two cars raced and banged door-to-door to the finish line where Steuerwald took his first ever street stock win by a couple of inches over Schlumbohm. Perry Tschetter came from starting position eight to finish third. Recent sportsmen graduate, Russ Peterson, finished fourth and Rob Anderson finished fifth. Tschetter and Anderson are now tied for the point lead. "I needed it. We've had really bad luck, but we finally got the car to turn," said Steuerwald, who wished to thank Laurie and Dale Furby for the giving him the opportunity to race street stocks. "It was the third time we started on the pole; lucky number three." Steuerwald and Curt Bauman won the heat races.
Chuck Harming took the early lead of the Sportsmen main event and was continuing to do so when the yellow flag waved for the slow cars of Rick Vander Weide and Daryl Revert. Each car had a broken rear axle and was unable to continue in the event. The field restarted and racing resumed until Jeremiah Jordahl spun his car in turn two and was t-boned by Richard Holbrook. Although taking a hard hit, each driver was uninjured. On the ensuing restart, Mark Jonke, who was running second, lost control of his car going the backstretch and flipped it for the second time this season. Janke climbed out of the car and was all right. Rick Goth took the second position away from Chris Ellingson on the restart and was chasing Harming who was still leading. Goth took the lead from Harming on the next revolution around the speedway and looked to be heading to the victory. With the white flag in the air, Goth's right rear tire blew out. The downed tire slowed Goth and allowed Harming to pass and take the checkereds first. Goth limped to a second place finish followed by Ellingson, Jeff Wittrock and Matt Ayres. "We've had pretty bad luck," said Harming after taking his first win of the season. "We needed it pretty bad." Harming, Goth and VanderWeide took win in the heat races. Wittrock won the "B" feature.
After taking the lead one lap into the NMRA Hobby Stock "A" feature, Rick Wibeto drove his car to his second feature win in a row. Dean Dunkelberger came from the fifth row to finish second. Justin Selken finished third after starting eleventh. Jeff Beck and Adam Thielbar rounded out the top five. Danny Lee, Beck and Johnny Monsees each won a heat race. Jeremy Fedeler won the "B" feature.
The team of Mulder/Ludwig took their second Deuces Wild win in a row. Following them to the line were the teams of Claussen, Foster, Harmon and Olson. Heat race wins went to the teams of Foster, Mulder and Claussen. Team Ellingson won the first "B" feature and Team Olson won the second.
