Johnson starts season late, but catches up in a hurry

By Shawn Neisteadt

Madison, SD--After making his first race appearance of the season one week ago, Gary Johnson wasted no more time to claim his first victory of the season. Johnson came form the outside of the front row and pulled away from pole sitter Joe Reidel as the green flag dropped on the NMRA 360 sprint feature.  Doug Martens started fourth, but was already second as the field completed one lap. Johnson pulled out to a comfortable lead of a straightaway, but that meant he had to start battling lap traffic early in the race.  On the sixth lap, Johnson tapped the rear bumper of a slower machine, which dropped the front nose wing out of position on the Johnson Motorsports #18. "It didn't effect the handling," said Johnson commenting on the misplaced nose wing.  "I figured I had a pretty good lead, so I slowed down." Johnson's slowing laps allowed Martens to pull within four car lengths, but Johnson held on for the win. The race ended on a rare red-checkered.  Kim Muntefering and Kory Rawstern bumped wheels on the front straight sending Muntefering's #31M on a high, end over end tumble.  Although the car appeared to be badly damaged, Muntefering walked away with his bell rung, but uninjured. Following Johnson to the line were Martens, Reidel and Steve Haman.   Rawstern rounded out the top five. Justin Saathoff finished sixth, and took over the points lead from Dusty Ballenger, who finished ninth. Reidel and Johnson won the heat races.

A last corner pass gave Rob Anderson his second Lake County Speedway Late Model Stock Car feature win in a row. Scott Freet started from the pole and led all but the last quarter of a lap.   The race was cautioned on lap three for JJ Zebell, and again on lap eight when Lee Schlumbohm lost a right front wheel and came to a stop on the speedway. As the cars came to the checkered, Anderson snuck under Freet and crossed the line first.  Following Anderson and Freet to the line were Curt Bauman, Perry Tschetter and Don Bickett. Heat wins went to Bickett and Freet.

It only happens once in a lifetime, and Daryl Reverts finally had the moment as he claimed his first ever win in the Sportsmen "A" feature. Reverts and Chuck Harming led the field of Sportsmen stock cars to the green and ran the first two laps of the twelve lap event side by side.  Harming was leading as the caution waved over the speedway for Josh Schmidt who had hit the turn four wall extremely hard and came to a rest on the front straight. Harming continued to lead until he lost control and spun out on the front straight.  With nowhere to go, Jeff Hertel piled into the stopped car of Harming.  The incident ended the evening for both drivers. Reverts had the restart lead and drove for the win.  Rick Goth started twelfth and mounted a late surge to finish second.  Richard Holbrook, Matt Ayres and Kevin Konda went home with top five honors. "Finally," said Reverts, who had just won his first feature in his five-year career. "I just kept counting the laps after the official said it was half way."

Rick Wibeto led all twelve laps of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature to take the win.  Jeff Beck finished second with Kermit Rose following.  Point leader, Mike Kiggins, finished fourth and Justin Selken finished fifth. Hobby Stock heat wins went to Wibeto, Don Brady Jr. and Kermit Rose.

Team Mulder claimed their first win of the season in the Deuces Wild division.  The teams of Larson, Claussen, Jensen, and Tilden followed them to the finish.
