Riedel Claims Second Career Victory

By Shawn Neisteadt

Madison, SD--Joe Riedel would claim his second ever Lake County Speedway 360 Sprint main event victory Saturday night at the high-banked speedway just south of Madison.

As the green flag flew, Doug Martens would take off like a rocket ship and pull out to a convincing lead.  Steve Haman would move into the top five on lap four as he passed Kevin Ingle for the position.  Ingle soon battled back and was able to move all the way up to the third place. As the front-runners ran into lap traffic on lap seven, Martens still had a sizeable lead over Riedel, who was running second.  Twelve of the scheduled fifteen laps were in the books as Haman's #23 would slow going down the backstretch and go to the pit area to retire for the evening.  At the same time, Martens, who looked to have an easy victory, got caught up in heavy lap traffic and would loop his car and spin to a stop in the "outfield." Riedel inherited the lead and would lead the remaining three laps of the event to put his Duffy Farms #11 into victory lane for the second time in his career.  Dusty Ballenger and Kory Rawstern passed Kevin Ingle as he slid high on the white flag lap.  Those three would finish in that order, respectively.  Justin Saathoff came from the ninth starting position to round out the top five. "I knew Dusty Ballenger was going to be there, I really had to go.  He's going to be tough all season," the joyous Riedel commented after the race. NMRA 360 Sprint heat race wins went to Martens and Ingle.

Matt Steuerwald had the lead of the NMRA Late Model Stock Car main event for the first quarter of a lap, but would break loose of turn two and lose the lead to J.J. Zebel.  Don Bickett soon piloted around the #3 of Steuerwald and the orange peeler #17 was into the second spot.  Curt Bauman ran side by side with Perry Tschetter until Tschetter would finally pull past Bauman and take the fifth position. The races lone caution came on lap five as Rob Anderson had a flat tire after contact with Lee Schlumbohm. Tschetter charged forward on the restart, but the car would break extremely loose coming off turn two and he would fall to the sixth position. Zebell, the pole sitter, held on to take his ninth LCS career win.  Bickett finished a strong second.  Bauman passed Steuerwald on the last lap to swap the third and fourth finishing positions, and Scott Freet rounded out the top five. "If you can't win from the pole, you can't win at all," said Zebell.  "But there are a lot of good cars her that can beat you." Zebell and Bauman won the heat races.

Jeff Hertel led all 12 laps of the NMRA Sportsmen "A" feature to find the way to victory lane. The caution came out on lap four as Rick Vander Weide lost an engine as he entered turn one.  During the caution period, Russ Peterson had to replace a tire that was going down.  Both cars had already gained several positions. Rick Goth, who had already moved from tenth to fifth as the caution waved, charged his way to the second spot, but would not be able to pass Hertel.  Kevin Konda finished third; Josh Schmidt finished fourth, and the fifth position went to Jeff Wittrock. Richard Holbrook won the "B" feature.  Konda, Vander Weide, and Daryl Reverts won the heat races.

Justin Selken claimed his first victory of the young season by taking the win in Saturday's NMRA Hobby Stock feature.  Selken was given the victory because the car that had actually taken the checkered flag in the race was disqualified for illegal engine parts.  Dean Dunkelberger came from eighth to finish second.  Andy Ullom came from the back of the pack, after stalling on lap one, to finish third.  Jeremy Fedeler and Dale Tomes finished fourth and fifth. Justin Lebahn won the "B" feature.  Tomes, Mike Kiggins and Walter Kiggins won the heat races.

Jensen and Jensen won the Deuces Wild "A" feature.  The teams of Claussen, Harmon, Foster, and Tilden finished in the top five. The teams of Foster, Claussen, and Ellingson won the three heat races.  Team Terveen won the consolation feature.
