A highly successful racing season at Lake County Speedway came to a close this weekend with the running of the annual Lake County Nationals Friday and Saturday night.
In his first appearance at the track this year, Justin Henderson showed he still knows the fast way around the high-banked 3/8 mile oval as he outran the field to win the 360 sprint feature. Henderson, the 1997 track champion, came from the fourth row to challenge leader Gary Johnson shortly after the halfway mark in the non-stop 15-lap event. As the pair approached a lapped car, Johnson went low and Henderson stayed high and Henderson’s momentum carried him into the lead which he held unchallenged the rest of the way. Butch Hanssen came on to pass Johnson, who was driving Mike Ellingson’s #2, in the final turn to take second. Kory Rawstern took fourth ahead of Kim Muntefering.
After falling one point short of his third track championship last week, Brad Wollman powered through the field to win a thrilling late model stock car feature. Wollman came from the fifth row to run down leader Don Bickett late in the 15-lap event. The pair ran side-by-side the final laps and it was Wollman taking the win by about a foot at the finish. Curt Bauman was third followed by Rob Anderson and Dale Furby.
Third row starter Russ Peterson took the lead on lap three and went on to win the sportsman feature. Peterson was never seriously challenged and took his second consecutive Nationals win by eight car lengths over Rick Goth. Friday night winner Rick Vander Weide was third followed by Matt Steuerwald and Russ Englund.
Dean Schoenwald took the lead with three laps to go enroute to winning the hobby stock feature. Dustin Evink just edged Dean Dunkelberger for second while Tim Dann and Andy Ullom rounded out the top five.
Schmidt and Grayson took the front-wheel drive feature ahead of Claussen and Emery.
