Lee Schlumbohm, Ron Dobesh, Jeff Wittrock and Johnny Monsees captured feature wins in an exciting night of racing at Lake County Speedway Saturday night.
Schlumbohm took the lead at the start of the late model stock car feature and, after losing the top spot to Curt Bauman for a lap midway through the race, came back to regain the point and went on to his second win of the year. While Schlumbohm maintained a somewhat comfortable lead during the late stages of the race, Brad Wollman and Todd Sterzinger were waging a fierce battle not only for position on the track, but for the points lead in the division as well. The pair fought with Bauman throughout much of the race for the runner-up spot and at the finish it was Bauman taking that honor with Sterzinger slipping under Wollman in the final turn for third. The finish moved Sterzinger within two points of Wollman in what has become an annual contest between two for the points title.
Ron Dobesh foiled rookie Joe Riedel’s run for his first-ever win when he took the lead with 2 1/2 laps to go and cruised to his third sprint car feature win of the year. Point-leader Kory Rawstern got by Riedel on the final lap to take second while Riedel settled for third ahead of Steve Haman and Brian Baker.
Jeff Wittrock led all the way to win his second sportsmen feature of the year. Another extremely close points race is taking place in the sportsmen and tonight it was second-place finisher Chris Ellingson regaining the point lead by just one marker ahead of Russ Peterson, who finished seventh. Ellingson passed Gary Gonyo on the final lap to take the runner-up spot, while Gonyo held on to third ahead of Rick Goth and Matt Steuerwald.
Johnny Monsees won his first-ever feature as he outran the field and outlasted a number of cautions to capture the hobby stock feature. Point leader Jeff Beck was second followed by Dale Tomes and Adam Thielbar.
The team of Claussen and Emery held off Olson and Gluhm to win their third front-wheel drive feature of the year.
