On a night marking the 40th anniversary of Lake County Speedway, it would seem only appropriate that drivers with names that have been associated with the track throughout its history would find themselves in victory lane.
In the late model stock cars, it was Todd Sterzinger picking up the feature win. Sterzinger’s father, Don, has been involved with the track since 1962 - first as a driver and now teaming up with his son. Sterzinger came from the fifth row to take the lead with two laps to go after an exciting side-by-side battle with Don Bickett late in the race. The win moved Sterzinger within two points of Brad Wollman in what has become an annual battle between the two for the points title. Rob Anderson was two car lengths back to take second followed by Bickett, Wollman and Scott Freet.
Another second generation driver, Gary Gonyo, took the lead on lap five when leader Jeff Wittrock suffered a flat tire and went on to win the sportsmen feature. Gary’s dad, Jim, is also a former driver at the track, beginning his racing career in the mid-sixties. Rick Goth came on to finish second ahead of Russ Peterson, Jeff Hertel and Moose Schuldt. Chris Ellingson, the point leader going into the evening’s action, had his hood come loose on the final lap while running in second, forcing him to the rear of the field on the restart. Ellingson’s misfortune allowed Peterson to take over the point lead in the division.
Ron Dobesh led all the way to win the non-stop sprint car feature, his second win of the year. Dobesh was chased the entire way by Brian Baker, who was followed by Kevin Ingle, Mike Ellingson and Steve Haman.
Mike Kiggins passed race-long leader Dustin Evink with two laps to go and then held off a hard charge by point leader Jeff Beck to win his second hobby stock feature of the year. Evink settled for third ahead of Andy Ullom and Dan Doyle.
The team of Claussen and Emery notched their second feature win of the year as they topped the field in the front-wheel drive feature. Anderson and Michelke were second followed by Paugh and McGillivray.
