Even a tornado couldn’t halt the weekly racing program Saturday night at Lake County Speedway. Thanks to the hard work of the crews throughout the week, the races were run without a hitch following the storm’s passing on Tuesday night. While fences were blown away, roofs tore off and buildings scattered into oblivion, few effects were felt during the evening’s racing action. And while the skies threatened once again, the races were swiftly run as the 19 events were completed in just two hours.
In the headlining late model stock car feature, it was Garretson’s Lee Schlumbohm leading all the way to score his first feature win of the year. Schlumbohm took the lead at the start of the 15-lap event and was dogged the entire way by Rob Anderson as the race ran non-stop. Anderson finished right on Schlumbohm’s bumper with Perry Tschetter third ahead of Todd Sterzinger and Brad Wollman.
The sprint car race was an exciting one as Gary Johnson passed Justin Saathoff on the final lap, foiling Saathoff’s bid for his first feature win ever. Kim Muntefering also got by Saathoff to take second, while Saathoff settled for third ahead of Kevin Ingle.
The sportsmen feature saw a driver capture his first feature win ever as Mike Husman outran the field for the win. Husman’s win in his Ford-powered machine finally came after seven years of competition at the track. Second went to Rick Goth followed by Brad Wollman, who was driving Josh Schmidt’s #34.
Rick Wibeto, Jr. was another driver to score his first ever feature win as he led all twelve laps to win the hobby stock feature. Wibeto took the win by two car lengths ahead of Ryan Van Emmerick. Dean Dunkelberger was third and Curt Ottoson fourth.
The team of Dafoe and Rose continued their hot streak as they captured their fourth front-wheel drive feature of the year. Harmon and Klarenbeck were second folllowed by Van Engen and Ludwig.
