The hot temperatures for the last several days subsided just in time for racing action Saturday night, and a large crowd responded by filling the stands at Lake County Speedway.
The final race of the evening's program was a real thriller as Curt Bauman slipped under Don Bickett in the final turn to take the late model stock car feature win. Bickett took the lead at the start of the 15-lap event while Bauman worked his way up from sixth to battle Lee Schlumbohm for second midway through the race. The race became a three-way battle for several laps while Schlumbohm and Bauman fought side-by-side, glued to Bickett's rear bumper. Schlumbohm dropped from the contest when he lost a motor on lap ten, leaving Bauman and Bickett to fight for the lead to the finish. Bauman was able to pull alongside Bickett on the final lap, sliding under Bickett to take an exciting win. Third went to Todd Sterzinger followed by Rob Anderson and Brad Wollman.
The 360 sprint feature saw rookie Kory Rawstern of Wentworth take his first-ever sprint car feature win. Rawstern, who has found himself upside-down a couple of times at the track this season, kept his car in the fast groove and led the non-stop race from start to finish, taking the win by a straightaway over Mike Ellingson. Steve Haman was third ahead of Kim Muntefering and Joe Riedel.
Matt Steuerwald pass Gary Gonyo on lap nine and went on to win the sportsmen "A" feature. Gonyo took the lead at the start of the 12-lap event and maintained it until he slid high in the second turn, allowing Steuerwald to move under him for the lead and eventually the win. Gonyo settled for second ahead of Rick Vander Weide, Ryan Nelson and Russ Peterson.
Curt Ottoson took the lead on the third lap and went on to win the hobby stock feature. Ottoson was pressured the final stages of the race by Rick Wibeto, who moved alongside to challenge Ottoson on the final lap only to come up one car length short at the finish. Following the race, Wibeto refused an engine claim, forcing the point leader to a one year suspension from the track. Wibeto's disqualification moved Jeff Beck to the second spot, followed by Joe Fitzpatrick, Dale Tomes and Dan Doyle.
