In spite of the fact that it was the eleventh night of racing at Lake County Speedway this year, three drivers found themselves taking feature wins for the first time at the track this year in racing action Saturday night.
Curt Bauman, a driver who dominated the hobby stock class the last several years, made the big jump to late model stock cars this year and garnered his first feature win in a thrilling feature event. Bauman led the entire distance but had to fend off a furious late-race challenge by defending champion Brad Wollman for the victory. Wollman came from the fifth row to take second from Kent Plimpton with five laps to go in the fifteen lap event, and then found himself on Baumans back bumper on the next lap following a caution. Wollman stayed right behind Bauman on the restart as the race wound down, and when Bauman slid a bit high in turn two on the final lap, Wollman was able to pull alongside as the pair battled down the backstretch. Coming out of the final turn they were still door-to-door but Bauman had just a little more momentum and he edged Wollman by a couple of feet at the checkered. Scott Freet drove a steady race to take second ahead of Todd Sterzinger and Larry Dixon. Sterzingers fourth place finish was a victory in itself as he and his crew frantically worked most of the evening to change engines in his car after losing his original powerplant in his heat race. Sterzinger rewarded his crew for their efforts with an excellent run as he came all the way from the seventh row to take fourth.
Brad Nelson found himself with the lead when early leader Brian Bakers engine went sour with four laps to go and went on to take his second Pam Oil/Valvoline/AC Delco/Lewis Drug 360 sprint feature win of the year. Chuck McGillivray was in second when his motor expired on the final lap, giving the runner-up spot to Mike Ellingson followed by Kim Muntefering, Gary Johnson, and Steve Haman.
Jeff Hertel scored his first feature win of the year as he topped the field in a wild Nordstroms Sportsmen A feature. Hertel came from the fifth row to pass leader Darin Duffy following a restart on the fifth lap of the twelve lap event and led the rest of the way. Second went to Russ Peterson followed by Duffy, Rick Goth and Mike Husman. Three-time feature winner and runner-up in points J.J. Zebell was suspended from the track following his dispute with officials after being black-flagged on the last lap.
Dan Doyle showed what a difference a week can make after he captured his first hobby stock feature win ever at the track. Doyle, whose car sustained heavy damage in a roll-over last week, was rewarded for his hard work during the week as he led wire-to-wire to take the win. Curt Ottoson was right behind Doyle at the finish while Jeff Beck came all the way from the sixth row to take third ahead of Justin Selken and Dale Tomes.
In the Deuces Wild front-wheel drives, it was the team of Fedeler and Tooker taking their second feature win in a row as they held off the point leaders Schmidt and Grayson.
