In spite of a week filled with rainy weather, the skies held off long enough Saturday to allow a night of racing action Saturday evening at Lake County Speedway. And even though the temperatures didn’t cooperate, a large crowd of fans braved the cold winds to witness an equally large field of cars on hand for the evening’s racing program.

In the sprint car feature, it was “Mr. Lake County Speedway”, Chuck McGillivray, taking home his forty-seventh feature win of his career at the track.   McGillivray led all the way in the fifteen lap event, but the win was anything but easy as McGillivray fought off a determined Chad Meyer for the victory. Meyer was able to pull alongside McGillivray on the final lap, but the nine-time Lake County champion held his line to just edge Meyer at the checkered. Third went to Tim Martens ahead of Buck Wilson while Fran Bruns steered Greg Johnson’s #18 to a fifth place finish.

Brad Wollman, the driver who dominated action in the late model stock cars last year, looks as if he will be the one to beat again this year as he outran a top field of cars to win his first feature of the year.    Todd Sterzinger had a good run going as he led the first eight laps of the fifteen lap event until something broke on his machine, eventually causing a flat tire and putting Sterzinger into the infield for the remainder of the event. Sterzinger’s misfortune gave the lead to Rick Eich on the restart, but Eich was only able to hold the point for one lap unitl Wollman used his familiar pass on the outside to take the lead and quickly pull away from the field. With Wollman cruising on the way to the win, a torrid four car battle was taking place for second and at the checkered it was Perry Tschetter just edging Dale Furby, Dan Jensen and Gary Brown for the runner-up spot.

The sportsman “A” feature came down to the last lap and it was J.J. Zebell getting by Chris Ellingson on the final lap to take the win.      Bob Dafoe set the pace for the first three laps until his car mysteriously lost a wheel while parading around the track during a caution period. That gave the lead to Ellingson, who looked as if he would be the first one to see flagman Jeff Peterson’s checkereds until Zebell got under him going down the backstretch on the final circuit. Ellingson was forced to settle for second while last week’s winner, Matt Steuerwald, took third ahead of Rick Goth and Matt Ayres.

It didn’t take rookie Rick Wibeto long to score his first feature win as he topped the field in the hobby stock “A” feature. Wibeto, who purchased defending hobby stock champion Curt Bauman’s car over the winter, took advantage of a restart with two laps to go to get by race-long leader Kevin Konda to nail the win. Jeff Ellingson got by Konda on the final lap to take second while Konda settled for third followed by Jeff Beck and Doug Van Liere.

The front-wheel drive feature was a battle down to the final lap as the team of Anderson and Michelke just held off last week’s feature winners, Schmidt and Grayson for the win.
