The 1999 racing season kicked off Saturday night at Lake County Speedway with the same exciting racing action that fans have become accustomed to witnessing at the high-banked 3/8 mile track.

The late model stock car feature was a real thriller as Dale Furby fought off Gary Brown and Brad Wollman for the win. In spite of his front row starting spot, the win wasn’t easy for Furby as Brown dogged him the entire way, with Wollman moving up from the fourth row to make it a three-way battle midway through the eighteen lap event. But it was Furby doing what he needed to do as he drove a flawless race leaving Brown and Wollman to settle for a close second and third, respectively. Defending hobby stock champion Curt Bauman had a good run in his first start in the class by taking fourth ahead of Rob Anderson.

The sportsman “A” feature was just as exciting as Matt Steuerwald got by leader Matt Ayres with three laps to go to take the win. With Ayres denying Steuerwald the inside line as the pair battled during the middle stages of the race, Steuerwald went to the high side to make the move that brought him the victory. Ayres fought back and moved alongside Steuerwald with one lap to go, but bumped the wall and dropped back enough to give Steuerwald the win. At the finish it was Ayres settling for second ahead of Rick Goth, a former hobby stock competitor who was impressive in his first run in a sportsman, Jeff Hertel and J.J. Zebell.

Jeff Hoogendorn took the lead at the start of the hobby stock “A” feature and was never headed as he took home the win. Hoogendorn was pressured most of the way by Jeff Beck, but the Rock Rapids driver got the job done as Beck settled for second ahead of Jeff Ellingson and Dean Dunkelberger.

The team of Schmidt and Grayson look like they could be the ones to beat this year in the front-wheel drives as they outdistanced the field to win both their heat and the “A” feature.
