Dobmeier, Rosenboom, Gerritsen Jr., and Arends Feature Winners Sunday Night

By Heather Riffel

(September 3, 2006-Brandon, SD) The sky finally cleared and allowed for racing Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway. The crowd saw a lot of great racing action with the four usual classes running plus two special races. Mark Dobmeier was able to pick up his sixth win of the season in the Outlaw Sprints. Jody Rosenboom picked up his fourth win of the year in the NMRA Sprints. Don Gerritsen Jr. was able to capture his eighth win of the season in the Late Model Stock Cars. Justin Arends won his fourth Hobby Stock feature this season. Chad Overgaard won the Dash for the Cash Late Model Stock Car race while Matt Steuerwald’s crew won the pit stop challenge. Justin Arends picked up another race win during the night when he won the Gary’s Tire Service Hobby special.

Mark Dobmeier started on the pole of the Outlaw Sprint feature. He immediately got out to a commanding lead and there was no one who could stop him. The first 20 laps of the event went caution-free and Dobmeier was able to lap seven cars in that time. The caution came out with five laps remaining when Chuck McGillivray’s car went up in smoke. On the restart it looked like Dusty Zomer might have had something for Dobmeier but Dobmeier was able to stay in control and walk away with the victory. Zomer followed in the second spot. Jake Peters and Gary DeWall had a tight race for third with Peters taking the position. John Lambertz rounded out the top five.

Dusty Ballenger started on the pole of the NMRA Sprint feature. He led the first seven laps before both Kevin Flowers and Jody Rosenboom came up to challenge for the lead. Flowers was able to take the lead. He led the next eight laps and looked like he was well on his way to his first win. Then the red flag came over the speedway when Mitch Coburn flipped his car in turn one. On the restart with three laps to go Rosenboom got by Flowers and took the victory. Flowers followed in the second position. Ballenger followed in third while Casey Abbas came in fourth. Randy Droescher picked up the fifth spot.

Justin Arends led all 12 laps of the Gary’s Tire Service Hobby special and picked up the $400 win. He battled with Tom Cauwels at the beginning of the race until the caution came out on lap seven when Cauwels blew up. This was also a planned caution so that the cars could reset and race the final six laps. On the restart Arends got out to a big lead while Brock Hess, Zeb Larsen, and Eric Taylor battled for the third position. When it was all over Arends took home the big money. Hess took the second spot while Larsen came in third. Taylor finished in fourth and Chad Graves came in fifth.

Don Gerritsen Jr. led the first lap of the Dash for Cash Late Model Stock Car event. Jordan Heiman passed him on the second lap and led the next five laps until the caution came out to double up the field. On the restart Gerritsen Jr. took the lead while Heiman moved back to battle with Darrin Korthals. Gerritsen Jr. was still leading after six laps when the caution came out again for pit stops. During the pit stops Matt Steuerwald’s crew performed a 25 second pit stop and got him out first. They picked up $500. After pit stops the top five were Steuerwald, Chad Overgaard, Gerritsen Jr, Lee Schlumbohm, and Gary Brown Jr. The next set of six laps was mostly led by Steuerwald until he got a flat tire. Gerritsen Jr. also suffered from a flat tire. That left Schlumbohm and Overgaard to battle for the lead. The caution came out one more time to reset the field. It was a green-white-checkered dash to the finish. Overgaard took the lead and held on to win the $1000 bonus. Schlumbohm came in second while Brown Jr. finished in third. Korthals took fourth while VanderWeide finished in fifth.

Justin Arends started on the outside pole of the Hobby Stock feature and led all 12 laps to take the victory. Behind him Zeb Larsen and Tommy Barber were battling for the second position. The caution came out on lap five when Shaun Taylor lost a wheel and Dave Kennedy ran it over. The caution came out again on lap nine when Shane Klaassen hit the wall. Trent Weber was disqualified for rough driving. On the restart Arends held onto the lead while Larsen and Barber battled lap after lap for second. At the line it was Arends followed by Larsen, Barber, Brock Hess, and Jared Nytroe.

Don Gerritsen Jr. started on the outside pole and led all 15 laps of the Late Model Stock Car feature. He was never challenged for the lead. Behind him Darrin Korthals and Rick VanderWeide battled for the third spot lap after lap. In the end it was another dominating win for Gerritsen Jr. this season. He was followed by Chad Overgaard, VanderWeide, Korthals, and Lee Schlumbohm.
