Bakker, Cressman, Gerritsen Jr., and Taylor Feature Winners on Hall of Fame Night

By Heather Riffel

(July 23, 2006-Brandon, SD) Hall of Fame night at Huset’s Speedway brought many people out to the track and they saw a great show with four excellent feature races. Gregg Bakker was able to pick up his first win of the season in the Outlaw Sprints. Johnn Cressman picked up his third win of the year in the NMRA Sprints. Don Gerritsen Jr. was able to capture his fifth win of the season in the Late Model Stock Cars. Seventeen year old Eric Taylor won his first Hobby Stock feature at Huset’s Speedway.

Steve Ballenger started on the pole of the Outlaw Sprint feature. The caution came out after the first lap when both Chad Meyer and Kenny Hansen had flat tires. Both cars returned to the track. On the restart Meyer, Dusty Zomer, John Miller, and John Lambertz all were collected on the frontstretch in an accident that occurred just past the flag stand. Zomer was able to replace his wing but Meyer and Miller were done for the night. Ballenger continued to hold onto the lead while Gregg Bakker and Mark Dobmeier battled for second. By lap 10 Bakker was challenging for the lead. Bakker was able to take the lead on lap eleven after Johnn Cressman’s spin brought out the caution. There was one more caution of the night when Jody Rosenboom spun on the backstretch and collected Zomer and Hansen. Bakker was able to drive away from the field on the restart and got out to a big lead. The only thing that slowed him down was lap traffic and Dobmeier was closing in the remaining laps. Dobmeier could not quite make it and Bakker took home the trophy. Dobmeier finished in second followed by Jake Peters in third. Ballenger ended up in fourth and Micah Schliemann rounded out the top five.

Brandon Rokusek started on the pole of the NMRA Sprint feature. Behind him Johnn Cressman and Dusty Wasmund were battling for the second position while Justin Jacobsma and Lane Brenden fought it for fourth. The caution came out on lap eight when Brenden tagged the frontstretch wall. During that caution the leader Rokusek went out of the race with mechanical failure. That gave Cressman the lead on the restart. He was able to not only hold onto the lead but drive away from the field. He led the remaining 10 laps. He was followed by Wasmund in second and Casey Abbas in third. Jody Rosenboom came in fourth while Jacobsma rounded out the top five.

Jeff Kroger started on the outside pole and led the first three laps of the Late Model Stock Car feature. Don Gerritsen Jr. moved up from his third starting position to take the lead on lap four. Gerritsen had control of the lead but behind him Jesse Akkerman and Kroger were battling for second. Gary Brown Jr. and Jeremiah Jordahl were battling for fourth. These battles continued side by side for the entire race. With three laps remaining Akkerman slowed which allowed Brown to move up and challenge for the second spot. Gerritsen took the win easily while Kroger edged out Brown by inches for second and third. Lee Schlumbohm finished in the fourth position and Akkerman ended up in fifth.

Jeff Deighton started on the outside pole of the Hobby Stock feature and took the early race lead. He was battling with Tom Cauwels for the race lead. On lap four Jason Bueckens and Shaun Taylor got together in turn three. This led to a caution on lap five for Taylor. Meanwhile Cauwels’ car had started smoking pretty bad and he was given the black flag. On the restart Zeb Larsen was challenging for the race lead when parts started to fly off his car which led to another caution and Larsen’s night was over. The next car to challenge Deighton was Chad Graves but his car then slowed on lap seven. That moved Shane Klaassen and Eric Taylor up to challenge for the race lead. Klaassen was able to take the lead on lap eight. Taylor was working on Klaassen for the race lead when Klaassen got a flat tire and brought out the caution on lap 11. This gave Taylor the race lead and he was able to hold onto it for the remaining laps to pick up his first win. Deighton followed in second while Jared Nytroe moved up from his 12th starting position to finish in third. Tommy Barber came in fourth and Taylor finished in fifth.
