Hot Racing Action on Steamy Sunday Night

By Heather Riffel

(July 16, 2006-Brandon, SD) The 90-plus degree weather continued on Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway but that did not keep away the drivers or the crowd. There was a huge audience on hand to watch some of the best racing action of the season. Chad Meyer was able to pick up his first win of the season in the Outlaw Sprints. The current points leader Mitch Runge also picked up his first win of the year in the NMRA Sprints. Lee Schlumbohm continued the trend getting his first win of the season in the Late Model Stock Cars. In the Hobby Stocks Jared Nytroe picked up his first Sunday night win this season at Huset’s.

Chad Meyer started on the outside pole of the Outlaw Sprint feature and did not give up the lead the entire race. There were three cautions and two red flags during this 25 lap feature. Early in the race Jake Peters and Micah Schliemann battled for third. Bill Boles and Wade Nygaard also were up front racing for top five positions. The red flag came out on lap eight when Chuck McGillivray flipped going into turns one and two. On the restart Meyer continued to lead until the caution waved two laps later for John Miller and Nygaard. On the restart Mark Dobmeier was racing with Schliemann for the third position. Also on the restart Peter moved up to challenge Meyer for the race lead on lap 12. It did not take long for Dobmeier to battle for the race lead. The red flag came out one more time for Jody Rosenboom hitting the fence in turn one on lap 17. On the restart Dobmeier was able to take control of the second position. He tried to challenge Meyer for the win but it was Meyer’s night to win. It was a much needed win for a driver who has had bad racing luck this season. Dobmeier was able to finish in second while Peters finished in third. Gregg Bakker came in fourth while John Lambertz finished in fifth.

Johnn Cressman started on the pole of the NMRA Sprint feature and got out to a huge lead. He seemed to be dominating the race until lap 11 when his car lost brake function. This ended the night for him and what was most likely going to be an easy win for him. Before his night ended there were many good battles behind him. Terry Chester, Mitch Runge, and Butch Hanssen were all battling in the top five. Jody Rosenboom took over the race lead after Cressman was out. He held onto the lead for six laps until Runge worked his way up from the sixth starting position to take the lead with two laps remaining. Runge was followed by Rosenboom. Hanssen finished in the third position while Eric McGillivray came in fourth. Chester rounded out the top five.

Lee Schlumbohm led all 15 laps of the Late Model Stock Car feature but it was not easy as he battled with Rick VanderWeide for the lead throughout the entire race. There were four cautions throughout the race but they were spread out evenly enough that it created more exciting racing. Howard Baartman battled with Matt Steuerwald and Gary Brown Jr. for third. When the checkered waved it was Schlumbohm with the victory. VanderWeide finished in second while Baartman came in third. Steuerwald captured fourth while Brown rounded out the top five.

Jared Nytroe started on the outside pole of the Hobby Stock feature and led all 12 laps. Nick Janssen and David Beman Jr. were battling for fourth when the caution came out for Eric Taylor who was in the third position when his wheel came off. On the restart Tommy Barber was working his way into the top five after starting eleventh. He was the reason the caution came out with three laps to go when he cut a tire down. Nytroe was able to pick up another win at Huset’s this season. Tom Cauwels finished in second while David Beman Jr. finished in third. Zeb Larsen came from the ninth starting position to finish in fourth. Brock Hess rounded out the top five.

Be at Huset’s this Thursday night when the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series rolls onto the track for the first time. It will be an event that you will never forget and one that can not be missed. The action starts at 7:30pm.
