Injured McCarl wows field Sunday Night

By Heather Riffel

(June 18, 2006-Brandon, SD) After two days of rain racing got started up again at Huset’s Speedway on Sunday night. There were lots of cars ready to race and lots of fans in the stands on Father’s Day night. The drivers did not disappoint the fans either with close racing and exciting finishes. The big story of the night was Terry McCarl returning to the track after suffering a broken leg May 20 at Sharon Speedway during a World of Outlaws event. No one knew if he would even be able to finish the race. Not only did he finish but he scored his 78th Outlaw Sprint win at Huset’s Speedway. Casey Abbas took home his first trophy of the year in the Sprint feature. Darrin Korthals picked up his third win in a row during the Late Model Stock Car feature. Chad Graves scored his second win of the season in the Hobby Stock feature.

In the opening laps of the Outlaw Sprint feature it looked like Larry Ball Jr. had the car to beat. He took the race lead and drove away from the rest of the field. Behind him Gary DeWall, Dusty Zomer, and Micah Schliemann all battled for the second position. By lap five Terry McCarl had moved from his twelfth starting position up to fourth. He took the third position away from Zomer on lap eight. He quickly moved into the second position. A caution came out on lap fourteen when Mark Dobmeier, Chad Meyer, and Wade Nygaard all got together on the backstretch. This caution bunched the field back together which helped McCarl tremendously. On the restart it did not take McCarl long before he was battling for the lead. Before McCarl could take over the top spot a caution came out when Zomer got into the back of the lapped car of Cody Hansen. On the restart McCarl was able to take the lead from Ball. Ball continued to battle hard but McCarl was just too much and he took home the trophy. Ball followed in second. Zomer scored a third place while Jake Peters came in fourth. DeWall rounded out the top five.

Lane Brenden took the early race lead in the Sprint feature. After two laps the red flag came out when Justin Jacobsma flipped in turn one. Once they were ready to go back racing Jody Rosenboom took a wild ride in turn two on the restart causing the red flag to come out once again. On the restart Dusty Wasmund challenged Brenden for the lead. Casey Abbas quickly joined that race for the lead. Abbas was able to get around both Wasmund and Brenden. Brenden dropped back to battle with Dusty Ballenger for third. The top three cars were able to separate themselves from the rest of the field. With two laps remaining the caution came out when Ballenger lost a wheel. During the green-white-checkered the caution came out for Troy Vink which led to another green-white-checkered. On the restart Wasmund tried to get around Abbas but was not able to in time. Mitch Runge finished in third followed by Brenden and Butch Hanssen in fourth and fifth.

Rick VanderWeide started on the pole of the Late Model Stock Car feature. Lee Schlumbohm and Darrin Korthals battled for the second position. The fourth place battle was strong between Matt Steuerwald, Gary Brown Jr., and Dale Furby. Korthals was challenging for the lead when the caution came out for Shannon Frewalt. On the restart the top five cars all fought to see who would get what position. With four laps remaining Korthals was able to get around VanderWeide on the high side in turn four. Korthals picked up the win with VanderWeide finishing in second. Schlumbohm secured the third position while Brown and Steuerwald finished out the top five.

The Hobby Stock featured opened with Jason Bueckens taking the race lead over pole-sitter David Beman Jr. The red flagged waved on lap three when Greg Brandt rolled his car in turn one. On the restart Chad Graves was able to get around Bueckens for the top spot. Beman fell to third. Graves built up a huge lead while Bueckens and Shaun Taylor raced for third. Graves had to big of a lead and took the race win. He was followed by Beman, Taylor, Zeb Larsen, and Bueckens.
