Larsen and Korthals repeat feature winners Sunday night

By Heather Riffel

(June 11, 2006-Brandon, SD) It was another night of thrilling racing at Huset’s Speedway Sunday night. Zeb Larsen and Darrin Korthals were repeat winners from last week in the Hobby Stocks and Late Models. Mark Dobmeier picked up an exciting last minute win in the Outlaw Sprints and Butch Hanssen picked up the win in a wild Sprint feature.

The opening laps of the Outlaw Sprint feature had Dusty Zomer leading the way. There were many battles going on throughout the race including Dusty Ballenger and Chad Meyer fighting it out for second while Gregg Bakker and Jody Rosenboom battled for fourth. Meyer steadily worked his way up to Zomer and by lap ten Meyer had taken the lead. Also on the move was Mark Dobmeier who was in third by lap 12 and had moved up to second by lap 18 after starting in the eleventh position. Once Dobmeier took second he focused his attention on trying to catch Meyer. Dobmeier was able to catch Meyer and with the help of lap traffic he overtook Meyer for the lead with only three laps remaining. Dobmeier picked up his second win of the year. He was followed by Meyer, Zomer, Ballenger, and Bakker.

The racing action was exciting from the beginning in the Sprint Car feature. Donovan Peterson took the early race lead but Jody Rosenboom, Troy Vink, and Johnn Cressman were three-wide battling for second right behind him. Cressman took control of the second position and was looking towards the lead when he and Vink got together causing the red to come out on lap four when both sprints tipped over. On the restart Rosenboom and Peterson got together battling for the lead. Both cars continued on but a few laps later the caution was waved when Peterson slowed with a flat tire. This gave Butch Hanssen the race lead. Rosenboom continued to move backward after getting front wing damage in the incident with Peterson. Hanssen was never challenged for the race lead and he picked up his first win of the season. Coming in second was Brandon Rokusek followed by Dusty Ballenger in third. Mitch Runge came from fourteenth to score fourth and Rosenboom ended up finishing in fifth.

Chad Overgaard and Lee Schlumbohm battled for the early race lead with each of them leading a lap before Schlumbohm was able to secure the position. Overgaard ended up sliding into the wall which caused him to drop back in the running order. Schlumbohm was firmly in first until lap nine when Gary Brown Jr was able to try and challenge for the lead. Schlumbohm was able to maintain the lead. The caution flag came out on lap twelve when Jesse Akkerman and Justin Glaser got together. On the restart it was Darrin Korthals heading to the front in a fast way. He was able to get by Overgaard for third on lap twelve. On lap fourteen he passed Brown for second. Korthals got to Schlumbohm on the last lap and was able to slide in front of him in turn four which led to a very dramatic ending for everyone in attendance. Korthals picked up his second win in a row and also his second of the weekend after winning the Late Model feature at Rapid Speedway on Friday night. Schlumbohm came in second while Brown followed in third. Overgaard finished in fourth with Rick Vander Weide rounded out the top five.

Zeb Larsen led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature without being challenged. The racing action behind him was heated though in the early laps. With David Beman Jr. securely in second Chad Graves and Tom Cauwels battled it out for third. Other battles in the top five were between Jared Nytroe and Trent Weber. There was a caution with two laps remaining when Shaun Taylor slowed on the speedway. On the restart everyone stayed in single file which gave Larsen his second win of the season. He was followed by Beman. Coming in third was Graves while Weber finished in fourth. Shane Klaassen was able to pick up the fifth position.
