Steensma, Klutman, and Mellenberndt first-time winners in Thursday Thriller

By Heather Riffel

(June 8, 2006-Brandon, SD) The second night of the Thursday night Thriller series at Huset’s Speedway featured even more exciting action. Mike Steensma was a first time winner in the B-Modifieds while Brett Mellenberndt picked up his first win in a Wingless Sprint. Jim Klutman was also a first time winner in Factory Stocks. Other winners were Chris Bornitz, Troy Schreurs, and Steve Eliason.

The Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint Car feature got off to a wild start when Bill Smith flipped his car on the frontstretch immediately after taking the green flag. He was able to walk away from the accident but the car would not be able to continue on. Dana Buttemeier took the lead on the opening lap by getting around Andy Anderson. Coming quickly to the front was Brett Mellenberndt. He got by Dusty Ballenger for third on the second lap. By lap four he had passed Anderson for second and on lap five he got around Buttemeier for the lead. He was able to dominate the rest of the race. He was followed by Buttemeier, Anderson, Ballenger, and Jeff Davis.

The B-Modifieds feature had Andy Hofmeyer starting on the pole. He battled the whole race with Mike Steensma. Steensma used every part of the track to try and get around Hofmeyer. On lap seven Steensma used the low line but could not squeeze by so he moved up to the high side where he was able to get around Hofmeyer. Steensma held on for his first win. He was followed by Hofmeyer. Finishing third was Clint Potter followed by Brett Pospisil.

Andy Gabrielson started on the pole of the Sportsmen feature. Steve Eliason was able to get around Gabrielson on the second lap. Gabrielson tried the rest of the race to get around Eliason. The other big battle was between two Hobby Stocks. Jared Nytroe and Tommy Barber battled for third. The finish of the race was Eliason with the win followed by Gabrielson. Nytroe came in third followed by Barber and Jeff Deighton.

Ken Jacobs started on the pole of the Factory Stock feature. Larry Buckneberg went to the inside to get past Jacobs. Buckneberg ended up spinning Jacobs and Buckneberg was black-flagged and sent to the infield. Jacobs was able to get the first position back on the restart. Jacobs ended up slowing which gave Travis Christensen the lead. On the last lap Christensen lost a tire and ended up hitting Jim Klutman which knocked off his right rear tire. Klutman ended up crossing the finish line first missing his rear tire for his first win. Coming in second was Dusty VanderBrink. He was followed by Brandon Nytroe in third and Jacobs in fourth. Christensen rounded out the top five.

The 6-Cylinder Hornet feature started off with a caution for Tyler Demers. Once the racing action began Troy Schreurs was able to get the lead on the first lap. He went on to lead the entire race and pick up his second win of the season. Other racing action behind him featured Eric McGill and Demers battling it out for third on lap three. On the last lap McGill tried to get around Tyler Larsen for second but Larsen held on to finish second behind Schreurs. McGill came in third. Josh Van Engen and Justin Scarborough rounded out the top five.

Chris Bornitz took a commanding lead the entire race in the 4-Cylinder Hornet feature event. The race for second was between Brian Voges and Brianna Schroeder. They battled back and forth the entire race. Bornitz took the checkers followed by Voges, Schroeder, Travis Schreurs, and Josh Downs.

The action returns to Huset’s this Thursday with the new Thursday Thriller Series. A full night of action takes to the high banks again on Sunday, featuring the Outlaw Sprints.
