Schliemann Wins in a Wild Night at Huset’s

By Shawn Neisteadt

(August 7, 2005–Sioux Falls, SD) It is the most feared thing in all of motorsports, and only one lap into the feature, that fear came all too real for Chad Meyer and Kenny Hansen.

Hansen missed the cushion as he raced off turn four breaking his #4 loose. That collected Dusty Zomer and with no where to go, Chad Meyer also tangled into the incident. The contact between the fuel tank of Hansen’s #4 and Zomer’s car was enough to send fuel spilling onto the speedway and igniting. The fuel quickly ran down the speedway and ignited around the stalled car of Meyer. All drivers were quickly out and to a safer area, but the fuel was very stubborn to suppress. Those three drivers were all fine, but their equipment was severely damaged.

With one lap counted the racing resumed after the clean up of the incident. Steve Ballenger brought them back to action with Mike Moore following. On the restart, Micah Schliemann moved into fifth and then into fourth as he passed John Lambertz in turn four. One lap later, Schliemann was third as he overtook Robert Bell in turn three. Schliemann claimed second from Moore on lap three then then set his sights on the lead.

Schliemann would gain that lead on the fourth lap as he stormed his way around Ballenger in turn four. Moore followed into the second position one lap later with Gregg Bakker taking third on lap six.

Mark Dobmeier was also making his way forward as he took fifth on lap six and then on lap seven Dobmeier took fourth from Ballenger.

On a restart on the eighth lap, it was Bakker claiming second as he passed Moore. As Schliemann entered traffic on lap 14, it was Bakker with the advantage and lead as they came off turn four. Schliemann battled back and reclaimed the lead in the same spot one lap later.

Schliemann and Bakker battled to the finish, but it was Schliemann at the line for the win ahead of Bakker. Dobmeier was third with Ballenger fourth and Justin Henderson was fifth.

"I had a real good race with Gregg (Bakker). I think you could race side by side with him all night," said Schliemann in victory lane.

It took several attempts to make a lap in the 360 feature. One of the stops was due to a three car tangle which sent Jesse Drost and Randy Droescher upside down. Each of those drivers were unharmed. On the next attempt at a start, Jordan Martens got a little loose in turn two and collected Brent Vonk. Vonk flipped while Butch Hanssen and Terry Reilly were also collected.

As for the race, Ryan Bickett led all 18 laps of the event to score the win. The win was not uncontested however as on lap nine, Justin Jacobsma showed his nose to Bickett in an attempt to take the lead. Bickett counted by switching his line and then drove off to the win. Jacobsma was second with Schliemann coming from the back to take third. Casey Abbas was fourth with Dusty Wasmund in fifth.

Darrin Korthals wasted no time in the Late Model Stock Car feature as he ran from the sixth row to the lead un just two laps. Colter Deutsch put up a good fight for the lead, but Korthals was too much as he scored the win. Lee Schlumbohm was second with Gary Brown JR in third. Fourth went to Deutsch with Jesse Akkerman in fifth.

Brett Larson was at a loss for words when he climbed out of his Hobby Stock after taking the win. The event payed $1000 to the winner from Gary’s Tire Service. The win was the second of the season for Larson. Chad Graves attemted to take the lead in the closing laps but settled for second. Third went to Jeff Deighton followed by Tate Eining and Steve Eliason.

Huset’s Speedway races again this Sunday night.
