Deighton, Gerritsen First time winners at Huset’s

By Shawn Neisteadt

(July 17, 2005–Sioux Falls, SD) With light showers threatening to halt racing action, the skies cleared at the conclusion of hot laps and set up for a perfect night of racing. In the winners circle for the first time was Jeff Deighton after the hobby stock feature. Don Gerritsen JR took his first ever win in a late model stock car while Dusty Ballenger and Mark Dobmeier repeated wins in the sprint cars.

In the outlaw sprint car 25 lap feature it was Shane Spurlock leading the opening laps, the first laps he has led in an outlaw sprint car. Two laps into the event, the outside pole starter Steve Ballenger pulled alongside the race leader. Ballenger used the momentum and rode the cushion into the lead as the leaders raced off turn four. Gregg Bakker was making a charge as he took fourth from Justin Henderson on the third lap coming off turn two. Mark Dobmeier was also looking fast as he took second from Spurlock on the same lap.

Bakker continued to march forward taking third on lap five whild Dusty Zomer was busy making his way into the top five and then fourth on lap six. Jake Peters broke into the top five on lap seven.

The interval between Ballenger and Dobmeier was down to forty-nine tenths of a second lap lap nine and shrunk to even less as lap traffic became an issue on lap ten.

On the eleventh lap the stalking ended as Dobmeier used a slide job to take the lead from Ballenger entering turn three. From there to the end it was all Dobmeier as he took his second win of the season. At the finish, Bakker was second one full straightaway behind Dobmeier. Zomer took third with Chad Meyer driving from the back of the field to fourth. Peters rounded out the top five.

Doug Martens and Justin Jacobsma were battling for the lead of the 360 sprint car feature with only four laps remaining. Their battle was interrupted by a caution flag for Jordan Martens as he spun in turn two. That caution bunched the field up and allowed Dusty Ballenger to get the drive off turn two and rocket from third to the lead. Micah Schliemann was also moving forward as he drove from sixth to third in one lap. On lap 15 it was a three wide battle to get into the top five in turn two. In that battle, Jody Rosenboom got loose coming off the turn and spun his #6. That set up a two lap shoot out in which Schliemann was able to get to second but Ballenger was untouchable. Ballenger drove from eighth to the win while Schliemann passed 13 cars to take second. Jesse Drost came on in the final laps to take third followed by Butch Hanssen in fourth. Doug Martens, who led the first 14 laps, finished fifth.

He had won on the speedway before in a hobby stock and also a sportsmen stock car, but the win was special for Don Gerritsen JR in the late model stock car feature. Since moving into the class at the start of 2005, this was Gerritsen’s first ever win in the division. Gerritsen led all 16 laps for the victory but had to hold off some very strong competitors for the entire distance. Gary Brown JR edged Lee Schlumbohm by inches for second. Rick VanderWeide won the "B" feature then drove from sixteenth to fourth in the "A." Ray Sveegen was fifth just edged out by VanderWeide.

Jeff Deighton may have had the most popular win of the night as he took his first ever win at Huset’s in the Hobby Stock feature. Deighton took the lead from Brock Hess on the opening lap and never looked back. Lane Brenden drove from tenth to second with Chad Graves driving from ninth to third. Tony Guischer was fourth with Trent Weber fifth.
