Alley, Johnson and Johnson first time winners at Huset’s

By Shawn Neisteadt

(July 3, 2005–Sioux Falls, SD) On a night with two outlaw sprint car features, each one would go to a first time winner at Huset’s with Billy Alley taking the first and Wayne Johnson the second. Tracy Johnson also scored the first win of his Huset’s career in the Hobby Stocks.

The first of two-complete 25 lap 410 Outlaw Sprint Car features went flag to flag without any incidents on the speedway. John Lambertz took the early race lead and held the top spot through lap eight. On that lap, defending champion, Gregg Bakker, delivered the slide job in turn four and overtook the top spot. Billey Allen of Lincoln, NE was on the charge and move by Dusty Zomer and Lambertz on the tenth lap putting the Speedway Motors #22 into third just behind Jake Peters. The leaders raced into lap traffic on the eleventh circuit of the event with Bakker continuing to lead. On the fourteenth lap, it was a side by side battle for second between Peters and Alley. One lap later, Alley moved into second in turn four. Only seven laps remained as the battle for the lead heated up. Alley maneuvered into the lead in turn four and he would never look back. Not only was it Alley’s first win at Huset’s, it was his first outlaw sprint feature win in the United States. Bakker took second followed by Peters. Chad Meyer made a last lap pass to move into fourth just ahead of Dusty Zomer.

The second feature for the Outlaw Sprints was just as exciting, but would not go flag to flag. The yellow waved on lap 2 when Brock Dump cut down a tire. On the restart, two former champion got together and spun in turn two. Bakker and Gary DeWall were both able to push off for the restart. Micah Schliemann continued to lead as the field again picked up speed on there restart. On lap four it was Jake Peters takeing second from Mike Moore. On the fifth lap, Clint Garner jumped the cushion in turn four and overturned his #40. The car was a mess but Garner was unharmed.

The troubles continued for Dump and Steve Ballenger as they banged eachother on the restart. Dump rolled his #12 and heavy damage was sustained by Ballenger’s #53. Both drivers walked away as their cars went to the infield.

Peters was running second and bobbled on the restart allowing Moore to take second with Wayne Johnson taking third. Johnson then took second from Moore with Peters striking back and taking third from Moore. One lap later, Mark Dobmeier and Peters started trading slide jobs as they traded third.

Lap traffic was an issue on lap 10 as Schliemann led Johnson by six car lengths. One lap later, that small lead diminished and Johnson took the lead as they raced off turn two.

Johnson led the rest of the way to give the Oklahoman his first win at Huset’s. Schliemann was second with Peters third. Billy Alley was fourth with Dombeier fifth.

Casey Abbas took the lead of the 360 sprint feature one third of the way through the 18 laps event and went on to score his second win of the season. Butch Hanssen was second with Donovan Peterson third. Brad Nelson was fourth and Brent Vonk took fifth.

Gary Brown Jr took the win in the late model stock car feature by passing Dan Jensen for the lead with ten laps to go. Darrin Korthals was seonc followed by a side by side battle between Lee Schlumbohm and Jesse Akkerman. Jensen was fifth.

Tracy Johnson drove a flawless race in the Hobby Stock feature to take his first win at Huset’s. Justin Arends was second followed by Chad Graves. Tony Guischer was fourth with fifth going to Brett Larson.
