Dobmeier Dominates Outlaw Sprint Feature at Huset’s

By Shawn Neisteadt

(June 16, 2005–Sioux Falls, SD) Mark Dobmeier’s luck at Huset’s Speedway went south for the winter in the final points race of 2004. On that night, Dobmeier lost an engine with just a few laps remaining in the final race. That engine cost Dobmeier a shot at the track championship. Since then, things have not gotten much better for the Grand Forks, ND native as he has lost several motors and been tangled up several times on the track. The luck finally changed as Dobmeier took his first win of the 2005 Huset’s season on Sunday night.

Dobmeier took the lead at the drop of the green with Jake Peters passing Mike Moore for second in turn four. On the second lap of the 25 lap event, Dusty Zomer rocketed by Moore and Peters and into second place. On the next lap, Moore bobbled slightly and allowed Gregg Bakker to move into fourth and Justin Henderson to take fifth. With three laps counted, the yellow lights lit as the #4AU of Lynton Jeffrey spun in turn two.

On the resulting restart, Bakker, Henderson and Terry McCarl went three wide as they battled for fouth. Just ahead of them, Peters jumped the cushion allowing Bakker to take third with Moore and Henderson following.

Dobmeier continued to lead as he faced lap traffic on lap seven. Peters was moving forward once again as he took fourth away from Moore on that lap. One lap later, McCarl moved into the top five as he overtook Moore. On lap 12, McCarl made a daring slide job on Peters to take fourth, but Peters counted and dove back under McCarl and held the position as they raced off turn four. That battle was interupted on the thirteenth lap when Peters looped his #57x in turn four.

Wayne Johnson tried to steal fourth from McCarl on the restart, but was unsuccessful in his attempt. McCarl then made his way into third as he passed Bakker on lap 14, but Bakker came right back to retake third in turn two. McCarl then made it back around Bakker in four. One lap later, Johnson and Bakker were trading slide jobs for fourth place.

The caution was again waving on lap 16 when Colin Northway spun in turn four. Four laps later, Bakker’s top five run ended when he spun in turn one.

With five laps remaining, the field restarted. The caution was coming out for a false start, but before the field could slow, McCarl got loose in turn two and collected Peters, Brock Dump and Joe Riedel. The others were able to contined, but McCarl’s race ended as the rear bumper of the car had been broken.

Dombeier held on in the closing laps to take the win, but was very lucky to hold on as his car was running out of fuel. "It ran out as soon as I let off over there (turn two)," said Dobmeier after the win. Zomer was second followed by Wayne Johnson. Jeffrey came back for fourth followed by Henderson.

Mitch Runge took the lead of the 360 sprint car feature one lap into the race and never looked back to take his first win at Huset’s of 2005. Jody Rosenboom came from eighth to take second followed by Lyle Howey. Jordan Martens was fourth with Jesse Drost coming from seventeenth to fifth.

Two features were run in the Late Model Stock Car class to make up the rain lost event from a few weeks back. Taking the win of the first feature was Jeff Kroger. Jesse Akkerman was second followed by Don Bickett. Gary Brown Jr was fourth with Jeremiah Jordahl fifth.

Darrin Korthals took the lead of the second Late Model Stock Car feature four laps into the event. Korthals never looked back as he scored the win. Don Gerritsen Jr was a strong second with third going to Ray Sveegen. Justin Glaser led the first four laps and finished fourth with Don Bickett fifth.

Chad Graves scored his second career win in the Hobby Stock feature. Lane Brenden was second and third went to Brett Larson. Justin Arends was fourth with Dave Kennedy fifth.

Huset’s Speedway has a very busy schedule over the next week. The World of Outlaws invade on Tuesday night. Gates open at 5 with time trials at 7:30. The outlaw sprint cars will have double features on July 3 with racing at 8 pm that night. Then on July fourth, the outlaws sprints, 360 sprints, Late Model Stock Cars and Hobby stocks will all be in action starting at 7 pm. The night will be capped off with a gigantic fireworks display. The admission cost for July 4 is just three dollars courtesy of Billion Automotive.
