Bakker Back on Top at Huset's Speedway

By Shawn Neisteadt

(May 19, 2005 – Sioux Falls, SD) One week after Mother Nature lets loose a shower of rain on the Huset’s Speedway racing program, it was the fathers turn to be treated to racing action. The big night started off with the make-up feature event for the 360 sprint cars and then ran a full night of great racing action.

In the outlaw sprint car feature, Gregg Bakker, the defending champion jumped from the front row and into the lead. Jake Peters and Justin Henderson battled for the second position through the first lap until Henderson made a slight bobble in turn two allowing Peters to drive into second and Chad Meyer to take second. Gary DeWall made his way into the top five on the second lap when he took the position from Mike Moore. DeWall was removed from the top five on the third lap of the race by Terry McCarl. McCarl started in the twelfth starting postion. On lap six, McCarl raced into fourth as he overtook Henderson in turn four.

Heavy traffic was holding up Bakker on lap seven allowing Peters, Meyer, McCarl and the rest of the leaders to close in. Bakker knew he had to go and did so in a bold way on lap eight when he split through the center of two lap cars in turn four.

McCarl continued his charge to the front as he moved alongside Meyer on lap 11 and drove into third as they entered turn three. One lap later, Peters was the next victim of McCarl as the Altoona, IA driver took second in turn one.

The lead for Bakker was five car lengths over McCarl as lap 17 started. One lap later, McCarl made a move to the inside of Bakker in turn one, but Bakker drove off turn two with the lead.

The first caution flag of the 25 lap event came out with 19 laps counted when Clint Garner and Lyntron Jeffrey got hooked together on the front stretch. Garner took his #40 to the pits and Jeffrey restarted at the tail of the field.

On the ensuing restart, McCarl again made his way to the inside of Bakker in turn one, but Bakker again was able to hook up and hold the lead as they came to the backstretch. On lap 21 the rest of the top five continued to battle as DeWall took fifth from Henderson. With three laps to go, McCarl pulled the slide job on Bakker and took the lead in turn two. Bakker didn’t call it quits and drove the #11X under McCarl and back into the lead.

With the white flag in the air, McCarl again dove under Bakker and used the slide job to take the lead in turn two. Bakker again dove to the bottom the top two cars drove off turn two side by side and came charging up on a lapped car. Bakker and McCarl made some contact and McCarl then contacted the wall and looped the #24 on the backstretch. The damage on the front of the Big Game Tree Stands #24 was enough to put the car to the infield, but all was not done for Bakker.

With two laps remaining the field again restarted, but the red soon flew when Jeffrey and Moore tangled and flipped in turn three. Both were unharmed.

Bakker held off a hard fight by Peters to give Bakker his first win at Huset’s of the season. Peters was a very close second followed by Meyer and DeWall. Wayne Johnson drove from eleventh to fifth.

In the make-up 360 sprint car feaure, it was Randy Droescher leading all 18 laps to take his first win of the season at Huset’s Speedway. "This is kick ass," said Droescher as he was joined by his children and a grandchild in victory lane on Fathers’ Day. Brandon Rokusek was second followed by Dusty Ballenger. Terry Reilly finished fourth with Lyle Howey III taking fifth.

It took eight laps for Micah Schliemann to drive from eleventh to the lead of the 360 sprint feature. Schliemann never looked back as he took the win. Butch Hanssen made a last lap pass on Mitch Runge to take second. Runge, who led the first eight laps was third. Casey Abbas also made a pass on the last lap to take fourth followed by Jesse Drost.

Don Gerritsen JR had the restart lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature with just two laps to go. Don Bickett was making a bit for the win, but was called for jumping the restart and sent to the tail of the field. That put Gary Brown JR in the second position for the restart. Brown moved to the bottom of the track and took the lead in turn two. Brown took the win followed by Darrin Korthals. Gerritsen took third with Jeff Kroger fourth and Jesse Akkerman fifth.

Brett Larson drove a flawless hobby stock feature to take his first win at Huset’s Speedway. Lane Brenden was second followed by Tony Guischer. Justin Arends was fourth with Jeff Deighton fifth.

Huset’s Speedway races again this Sunday night with a full night of action plus the make-up feature for the Late Model Stock Cars. The Outlaw Sprint car make-up feature is July third. July fourth will be a huge night at Huset’s Speedway as the Outlaw Sprints will be in action as well as a huge fireworks display. The World of Outlaws Sprint Series invades on June 28 at 8 PM sharp.
